I think my fuel filter is in need of replacement. Now at 37K and may have developed an issue.

Sunday, for some unknown reason I started the enging, pulled out of a parking lot and the Jeep refused to accelerate and didn't want to upshift. Than it started to misfire but did not throw a CEL. I pulled over and it was running real rough at idle an died. Shut it off and restarted and still running rought. Tried it again after letting it set for about 30 seconds and all was fine.

Anyway, I'm thinking about changing the filter today but there is no dealer handy. However, there is an autozone and a napa nearby. Do either of these folks stock a good filter.

Thanks for any input.

Napa has the WIX filter for it.

Does the NAPA filter have a provision for the water sensor?

I didn't know that the CAT filter didn't until it showed up at my door and that sort of hacked me off a little bit.

Also, taking the head off the firewall to change the filter is a waste of time. Just crawl under, reach up and unplug the connector so you can see what you are doing without breaking it (30 second job), and then use a filter wrench to get the old one off. Reverse procedure, prime, and start. Bingo you're done.

The SM mentions connecting a hose to drain the filter before removal. Any idea what size??? I don't want a mess on my garage floor.

Yes, the wix filter does have the provision for the WAF sensor. You will need to unscrew the water drain that comes with it, transfer the new gasket, and screw on your WIF sensor hand tight. The nipple for a drain hose measures 5/16" so an inside diameter hose of that dimension or maybe a tad smaller should work. I never use one....I just unscrew until it starts draining and use a catch pan. It is a straight shot down to the floor so it's not like you'll get it all over the engine. The WIF sensor plug has a flat side to it...sqeeze this and the plug should pull right off.

Go with the NAPA filter. That's what I got when I changed mine. My local store even had it in stock, no special ordering and they offer a discount if you are an AAA member..... not sure if all NAPA stores do that.

WIF sensor fits in the bottom. just take out the plactic water drain that comes on the filter and install your sensor.

Gentlemen,

About fuel filter replacement... I am considering using the Baldwin brand, which I already have as oil filter. Is this brand perceived as being of good quality, or else?

37K, with one filter?....no wonder you have an issue.

I recently went 45,000 miles on my last one. NO issues.

Just my :2cents: , but fuel filters on diesels need to be changed at or around 20K. Much longer then that, and now you are risking starving your injection pump of CLEAN & COOL diesel........

When I'm in town, which is most of the time, I always buy it at the same place. I've never found any water in it. The filter media looked kind of greyish in color, but no grit or chunks jumped out at me. I know I went way over time on it, but the thing was still running strong, and getting good fuel mileage.

As far as changing the fuel filter goes, taking the whole bracket off the fire wall is the only way to go. Super easy!

Here is a good write up on how to change your oil filter.

Could be, and I considered do that this last time, only I couldn't get the temp sensor connection undone and didn't want to break anything. I just opted to do it the way of lieing on my back.

I hope you realize your filter is an 8 micron one....

The one on the right? That's the fuel heater connector which now probably is melted. That's why it won't come off.

Actually, I think the Wix filter ia a 10 micron one. No, the one on the left which is the temp sensor. Remenber I said the temp sensor? The fuel one comes off easily because I check it weekly for the dreaded leak. It is still vibrant yellow and is pristine looking as the day it was new.
