My trusty 2005 CRD has just under 85,000 miles and I have developed a slow coolant leak. I top off every couple weeks or so when the low coolant light comes on. I took it to the dealer and they told me it would be $235 to replace a couple hoses that are leaking. Does it sound like they are trying to gouge me?

$235 seems high to me for 2 hoses, but I am a shade tree mechanic at best.

1) What is their labor rate?
2) are they replacing all the hoses?
3) Did you see any white powder (Cocaine) up their nose?

The lower hose is $43 and the upper less than that I suspect. If you are a shade tree, you should be able to put them on. You might as well put in new coolant since you are close to the 5 years/100,000 mile mark on it.

Awesome, that is kind of what i was thinking. pay the dealer $235.. or do it myself for under $100.

Thanks for the advice!

The lower hose looked like a PITA.
Around my neck of the woods that wouldn't be bad considering labor rates are around 100 an hr.

I think that is the wrong picture, because our electric fan is on the outside...

Ok cool, thanks.. $55.00 for parts is not bad. Now I hope the labor isn't too much of a pain!

Where is it leaking from? A couple of years ago I had the same problem until I crawled under and found about a 1 inch diameter hose under the EGR valve was seeping coolant I put a second screw clamp around the hose and have not had any leaks since. Good luck

Here are some photos of the underside of the CRD. This looks aweful messy..

In picture #2 it looks like some oil is leaking fom my CAC hose in the upper left corner? am I right? (I need some samcos)

What is causing the whitish looking drip? Is it the coolant mixing with oil? The orange colored stuff is the coolant. (just pointed it out because it is sometimes green)

I need some expert opinions here!! what am I looking at??

Make sure the oil is not coming from the intercooler itself. I had a small hole in my factory intercooler.

It certainly seems like the leak on your vehicle is the same as kccrd's. Picture #6 shows the EGR cooler and coolant lines. Check the fittings on those and also the two ports and lines that branch off to the EGR valve. The upper and lower radiator hoses do not need to be replaced unless you see coolant leaking from the front of the vehicle most of the time. Hope fully a rubber hose and a couple clamps fixes the problem...cost $5. That dealer needs professional help.

Ok, I did some more investigating and i think you are right GDE & kccrd. Slightly below the fuel filter up against the engine block there are two small hoses (going into the EGR I think). And they appear to be the source of the coolant leak. Is that where the EGR is located?

Now I still am not sure where the oil is coming from. Is it common for oil to leak from the CAC hoses when they start going?
(I had about 81,000 miles on the hoses before I did the ORM or EHM)

I also think its the EGR from looking at the pictures...

I have the same oil coming from mine as you do in these pics... both sides, so I guess I have a small leak. I I cleaned off the oil in the fall and its back now, not as bad but I do have the CCV relocated now. Did you replace with aftermarket or OEM intercooler? THanks!

Ok, here is the source of the leak. Is this the EGR?

What would be the best way to get in here? unbolt the fuel filter assembly from the firewall?

That is the EGR assembly you are pointing at. The oil leakage is common from the joints where the EGR pipes mate with the EGR valve, it is not a big deal. If working from the top side you will hae better access by removing the intake throttle and intake elbow and the fuel/water separator. If working from the bottom side, then the starter motor needs to be removed. The two little rubber hoses that appear to be leaking are just a little coolant circuit to cool the EGR valve. This is a cheap fix, but may require a few hours labor to get to everything.

Thanks so much for the help, I feel a lot better now!

I ordered the Samco hoses so hopefully that will solve the oily CAC hose.

Thanks again!

I would have felt better with it being a radiator hose myself. That hose is is booger to get access to.
