Boiler's Rear Bumper Build - Prototype #1 installed pg 4

After about 3-4 hours each night for two months I've been researching components, designing, measuring my jeep, running analysis, and meeting with vendors and subcontractors, I finally get to make something this weekend...my welding fixture! :roll:

I ordered waterjet and machined parts yesterday and we're planning on assembling it Friday. This fixture cost me in excess of $400 to make but it will be worth it. Basically it is a CNC waterjet top plate, with CNC holders bolted to it in specific places. Each holder or pair of holders has tapped holes on several faces. All of our parts will have 1/4" holes in them that we will use to bolt all of the parts to the fixture in precise orientations. Finally, we'll weld both sides of the bumper. All of this will allow us to fight heat warpage and really speed up the assembly & layout process, as well as make repeatability a non-issue.

Today I took the day off of my day job to work on part drawings a bit, so hopefully I can order them tomorrow and start building the bumper early next week! I've basically got 2 weeks from today to get it finished and it is going to take a miracle to get all the ducks in a row to make it happen, but we're going to try our very best. I've pretty much devoted every spare minute to this project for two months and I don't want to see it come up short now. Anyway, here are the useless teaser pictures. :mrgreen:

Honestly I'm suspicious that it will "pay off" financially, so much time and money in it already. I'm hoping to sell a few, make one for myself, and break even at this point. But...I'll be able to easily make more after the first couple, the way I've set it up.

It will definitely pay off in that I'll have a sweet bumper on my jeep, as will a friend. That kind of makes all the effort worth it for me.

Watch out getting all of your ducks in one row, you know what they seem to do a lot of and I would hate for the floor to get all slippery from duck poo and you fall ! :BANANA:

Yep. 1/4" thick aluminum bumper, with options for hitch receiver, imbedded rear foglights, swing out tire carrier, jerry can holder, & hi-lift holder.

I just spent about 15 hours straight working on this...im toasted...

Ok so its going to be a rear bumper then...

The pics didnt really make it out to seem like a bumper.

What program are you using to do that? Autodesk Inventor or 3D autoCAD? Or maybe even some other form of autodesk?

I think the pic is of the jig he made to make the rear bumper and hold it in place while he welds up all the pieces.

Yes the thing I showed is just the fixture I'm building this weekend to hold the bumper parts in place while it is welded.
