I didn't ask for it but they sent me a free gauge for checking the wear of the newer serpentine belts. It is used to check the depth of the grooves on the belt. On the instructions it gives a web addy for getting additional gauges. Everyone might check to see if they can get one. Here it is: www.gatesbeltwear.com

Those are totally worthless and can not be used on most serp belts.Almost all OEM serp belts(KJ is one) that comes with a EPDM belts and cracking or using one of those guages does not tell you when they are really worn out.

A free tool that everyone already has is the way to check EPDM belts, your eyes.Turn engine on and watch the belt,if it moves side to side it needs to be replaced,if it stays straight it's still good.

So are some of the tools I've met around here but we keep them around just to keep numbers up not to actually use them. At least until they mess up too many times but, that is a totally different topic.

Uh actually the side-to-side movement of a EPDM belt is the wear indicator, means the shoulder is worn that centers the belt and it needs to be replaced. The depth of the ribs is not important.

So you are saying that if the ribs are worn down all the way it doesn't matter. Wrong.

usually by the time the ribs are worn, so is the shoulder

Usually isn't always. I think it would be a good idea to check both. Now if Gates was charging for the gauge I would question it but it's free. I'm sure they know what they are doing.

On a EPDM belt it doesn't matter,on a Neoprene belt it does since the Neoprene belt does not use a shoulder like a EPDM belt a uses the ribs to center itself.

Not that you will ever admit to being wrong, but here is what Gates says:

"UNEVEN BELT WEAR: Use the gauge to check all the valleys on the belt. If the readings are not consistent, this indicates pulley misalignment or other problems in the accessory drive system."

By that I would assume that if the shoulder was worn down it would indicate a misalignment of the pulleys. In that case replace the belt and check the pulleys for alignment.
