Ok late last night the CRD through a CEL, everything is running great, no excessive smoke, not acceleration problems. So I cleaned out the MAP sensor (which was caked with crud) and blew out the MAF sensor. Took it to advance had them run codes (and like a dummy the tech said our reader woudnt see anything) though it read PXXX something and I didn't right it down. He cleared the code, drove 35 miles and it came back on. Also gave it a new airfilter and checked the turbo solenoid filter which seemed fairly clean.

Went out and did the "key trick" for OBD II (on-off-on-off-on didnt work) and the instrument cluster rebooted and flashed "11111, 22222 etc" then 6.3, CEL remains.

Any thoughts, it is driving great and I will probably take it back to Advance tomorrow and have it scanned again or just say what the hell I need a code scanner.

I am a little worried because I have to commute but it is running perfectly, infact even better since i cleaned the MAP.

History is very basic, other than a battery drain early on it has run perfectly with no problems other than an occasional cold weather rough idle that a little Power Service smoothed out. Edit: and 53,000 miles.

If its running fine I wouldn't sweat driving it.

But, we can't begin to address anything without knowing the code. Next chance you get get them to read the code and post back.

It's possible that you fixed the problem(when you cleaned the MAP) and you just threw an errant code on the way home, those things do happen.

That's the problem with the Jeep ECU, too many sensors all over the place that sometimes work correctly and will give you the correct prognosis
and then when it feels like it will give you a lot of :banghead:

Ok guys here is what I got from the Advance auto scanner.

P1263 Fuel Air Metering, presumably the EGR though it is throwing 0 smoke(have also seen it listed as glowplug, and PCM)
U0121 list connetion to ABS controller (might have been because I had the battery unplugged, or I may have bumped the connection while fidgiting around in the engine bay will check connections. This is new since the first scan. I hope this isnt an ABS module issue.

Guys am I right thinking this is a glowplug (dealer for me scared of breaking the ceramic off) or should I start replacing the MAF, MAPP etc.

Its running really really smooth since I cleaned the MAPP

Yep, ohm out all your glow plugs, from the terminal of the plug to ground should be about .6 ohm. Open or high resistance means it's blown.

I will check the connections too, sounds like I shouldnt worry to much about driving it (see if the ABS code comes back) and just have the dealer do a glow plug replacement when I get it in.

About how many hours/cost is this replacement. As I said I am a little nervous given some of the tales I have heard of breaking plugs and loosing them in the cylinder head.

If you can change a light bulb, you can change a glow plug. The front one might take 10 minutes to replace. The back ones, up to an hour because there's more stuff in the way. They are like 40 bucks apiece online so don't let them rape you with parts markup.

Standard OBDII code readers ALWAYS report that Bus connection, ABS,BAS and traction control lites going on and it leaves the CEL lite "on" also but running it a bit will shut all the lites off after you disconnect the reader. P1263 is a glowplug IIRC #2 from the front but that ohms testing will pinpoint the exact one... My replacement glowplug from moparpartsamerica was $45 or so.

I understand to read the codes with key on, engine off and all this voodoo errant readings do not happen but I could be wrong- I always check with the blasted engine running and get the errant readings, warning lites every time!

Still building up my courage, if this was a gasser I wouldnt care I could take it apart and put it back together. But breaking off a plug in that head spooks me.

Though I probably should check the connections first since I was screwing around with the MAP sensor before I had the code scan.

You should know that some glow plug harnesses were put on backwards at the factory :juggle: So #2 could really be #3 :banghead:

So ohm them out

I agree that's it's most likely a glow plug. I had this code a few months back and the dealer had to change it out. Got the same code from the Autozone scanner.
