Pennzoil Platinum vs. Shell Rotella

It's been a while, so I figured it was time for another oil thread. :jester:

In my CRDs, the only oil I have ever used is Shell Rotella synthetic 5W40. I've never had any engine trouble and this oil seems to be good for the CRD based on oil analysis I've seen from other CRDs using it.

However, in all gas vehicles I own or have owned, I use(d) Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 synthetic. I currently still use this oil in my wife's car.

Question is... would there be a problem with using the Pennzoil in the CRD? Reason I ask is because oil is cheaper to purchase in bulk...and so if I could use it in my vehicle and hers too...it would actually save money over the long run vs. buying a separate oil just for the CRD.

No price is 2 much for me when it comes to oil....but i try to keep to val. tho...but im a gasser tho!

I'll preface this by saying that I change my oil every 6500-7000 miles in CRD. I'm currently running a mix of Amsoil 5w-40 Premium Diesel and European Formula oil. I've had blackstone do oil analysis on both of these (running unmixed) and they were pretty much the same. After seeing other oil analysis results posted here and reading what Blackstone has to say about oil brands, I'm starting to think that oil is oil is oil. Frequency of change is more important than brand.

Checked the owner's manual and though it's a little confusing because one paragraph under the diesel section mentions SL/CL oils, another paragraph does state CF oils or better only. So I suppose that would answer the question.

KJ - LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE page 0 - 3

ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES
Only use synthetic engine oils meeting the API
Categories SL/CF and Chrysler Material Standard
MS-10725. Those engine oils not meeting the viscosity
and API Quality and MS-10725 requirements
should not be used.
SAE VISCOSITY GRADE
The preferred engine oil is SAE 0W-40 Mobilt One
Synthetic. If you can not locate SAE 0W-40 Mobilt
One Synthetic, then SAE 5W-40 Mobilt One Synthetic
would be acceptable.

ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES - EXPORT
Use only Diesel Engine Oil meeting standard MIL-
2104C or API Classification CD or higher or CCML
D4, D5.
To assure of properly formulated engine oils, it is
recommended that SAE Grade 10W-40 engine oils
that meet Chrysler material standard MS-6395, be
used in accordance to ACEA B3, B4 specification.
European Grade 10W-40 oils are also acceptable.
Oils of the SAE 5W-40 grade number are preferred
when minimum temperatures consistently fall below
-15°C.

No any word about 5W-30 for KJ crd.

I use Schaeffer's Lubricants Supreme 9000 5W40 full synthetic. I like the stuff. You can buy it in cases of 6-1 gal containers and it is less expensive. Their products are really good and compete all day long with Amsoil.

How does Shaffers compair in cost to Shell per gallon with shipping? I can get shell at wally's world for $19.50 US /gal.

I used to drive 100 miles each way to buy cases of Delvac One for my ALH series TDI. It was the only stuff that met the specs. No Si (spark ignition) version of Mobil One met my needs, although it's now rated CF and Mobil Delvac isn't synthetic.

I use Rotella T because it's available. I might give Valvoline Ultra Blue a try if it was available in more places.

At risk of 'talking down' to any diesel owners, is it possible that anyone might not know that S(park ignition) rating of oil might not be applicable for someone driving a C(ompression ignition) vehicle?

I will have to get back to you on that one. Some of the Schaeffer's reps have set up auto parts dealers as sellers so you would be able to buy it over the counter. You would have to find the rep in your area. I will try and find my price list and let you know.

Schaeffer makes a darn good oil, but if pricing is the ultimate issue, I doubt that you will ever get a price that is as low as an off the shelf synthetic at Wally World or on sale at a auto parts store. But, Schaeffer will compete quite well with Amsoil and others and is way cheaper than even Amsoil's preferred pricing. If you purchase $350 or more of Schaeffer products (most would have to go in with somebody else to justify this) then the shipping is free from Schaeffer direct. Some dealers have specials that cater to individuals that don't use as much as, say, a commercial user. I know Mark at http://www.specializedlubricants.net/ has these specials once in a while. He does it especially for the forum members at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php and maybe you could get in on it.

I now use a local supplier of another brand now since I buy in bulk and can get great pricing, but I used Schaeffer in the past and it is a real solid product.
