How many people think that SVO cannot meet Tier 2 emissions without an exhaust after treatment?

No data - but guessing from comments that have been made

It should pass CO maybe particulates but fail NOx

If we are talking on-road emission where you have to certify over the FTP75/HWY/US06/SC03 cycles, there is no chance that you will pass without aftertreatment, especially on PM (DPF) and NOx (lean NOx trap or SCR).

A DPF is mandatory on all applications, there's no getting around that now.

For a light vehicle, using low-pressure EGR can get you in the box to use a LNT (this was the approach that VW takes with the Jetta). They also use HCCI (homogeneous combustion) in the partial load to reduce the NOx w/o using as much EGR and still maintaining the fuel economy.

For heavier vehicles, using SCR makes sense to maintain as much as possible the fuel economy benefit of the diesel, but you still must have EGR working to reduce the engine-out NOx so that the SCR usage is reasonable over the oil-change interval.

For applications that certify @ the dyno bench on the 13-mode cycle, you will still need SCR for the NOx control since 2 of the load points are at 100% load. If you are really creative in your combustion techniques and using low-pressure EGR, it would be possible to use a LNT but you still have the fuel economy impact of the rich-phase regeneration of the lean-nox trap.

I have a biodiesel emissions calculator Excel workbook I found online somewhere. You enter a number of variables and it gives you expected emissions numbers. Fun toy.

There is also a huge difference between the Federal EPA approval testing - MrMopar64's comments
and the State level tailpipe testing - lots of things will pass State that will not pass EPA

I should have clarified it, but I was tired.

Tier 2, off-road.
