Even if you do use the A/C its still good. The tranny cooler is in front of the condenser so unless the engine is over heating you can use the A/C all you want. If the tranny over heats with the electric fan on then you just need a bigger cooler and/or a cooler in the radiator like tjkj always recommends.

The aftermarket pan will have a boss for a temp sensor.

how much less fluid does the 42 have compared to the 45 or are they for all intents and purposes equal in fluid volume?

Miles and miles and miles of baby powder consistency sand and have only used 4-lo maybe 5% of the time

but i do have the 45 and an 03 with all sorts of cooling, excluding a mechanical fan

When i lived on the beach for a week earlier this year i did end up putting it in 4-lo and leaving it because i actually managed to get all 4 wheels tractioned in and partially dug in on a 60 degree incline with the tranny pan on the ground, tight enough that the tires weren't turning with slight pressure on the gas and a shift to 4-lo resolved that entirely, but then it would idle away from me down the beach (very - slowly) if i got out with it in gear to pick up firewood lol
The fluid capacity is within 1qt or so of each other(13qts for 42RLE,I believe, and 14qts for the 45RFE).The major difference is the trans cooler between the 2,The 45RFE's cooler is much more effective at keeping the fluid temps in check.

Now some will think that a engine overheating has nothing to do with the trans, more so when the trans has a stand alone cooler but heat transfer comes into play(as they are bolted together and the trans cooler is in from of the radiator) and they in fact do have a direct effect on each other.

I believe the aftermarket pan for the 42RLE will increase the capacity by approximately 1 quart. Between the aluminum pan with cooling fins and the extra 1 quart capacity, PML said you can expect a 10 - 20 degree temperature reduction.

i'd be interested in a pan if only for the temp sensor bung as long as there was adequate clearance between the 45 pan and the skid, which is somewhat tight as it is

It can but if you have a trans skid plate you will only see about a 5 degree drop and that would be very doubtful since you now just blocked off all the air flow that pan needs to get that 10-20 degree drop.

Oh and there already is a temp sensor in the trans, what do you think lights up that overtemp light.

True, but it would be helpful for those like LibertyFever who prefer to monitor by using a temperature gauge.

You can easily tap into that temp wire and use a electric gauge.Pan temp is not the best place to take the fluid temp anyways.

I've heard this. Are there any calibration/compatibility issues, or can one just buy say, an Autometer full sweep electric and see an accurate temp reading on that gauge with the KJ stock sender?

Thanks for the idea tjkj2002. I think I will tap into the existing transmission temperature sensor and simply calibrate a gauge to read the correct temperatures. I figure less invasive the better.

I really don't trust idiot lights that much either. I have an oil light that comes on once a month until i shut the jeep off and restart. Guages are so much more accurate. plus when they don't work you know it cause the needle doesn't move :jester:
