Water pumps don't turn off and on. The water pump is driven by the timing belt. There is a heater that is in the top right corner that has a clutch. It is driven by the fan belt. Is this what you are talking about?

Hey Sam. I still look to see what is going on once in awhile. I loved my jeep but the wife didn't. Just thought I would reply since no one had yet.

You're right. It is the one with the clutch on the top right side of the engine. When that one engages so does the a/c clutch at the bottom left of the engine. Why would these turn on and off so much? And what is the heater that you mentioned for?
Thanks again.

That is the viscous heater. It uses friction heat delivered by the engine's accesory (serpentine) drive belt to help heat up the coolant when the engine is cold. It should only turn on when the outside temp is 55 degrees F or less.

Many here have pulled the fuse for it to disable it, because it is a drag on fuel mileage in cold weather.

On the other hand, since you are from Alberta you will want to make sure this is connected to keep you & your Jeep warm for all but those two weeks of summer.

To get back to the question, what would be causing it to come on like that then? Is the temp outside near 55? It seems like it shoul be on and then turn off once the engine is warm. I think mine has been doing that. It's spring and the temp is up and down here in Michigan. Ever since my Eco Tune (which I really like so far) I have noticed that the engine sputters more at cold idle. Even if the defrost isn't on.

Is it supposed to come on even when the engine is at full operating temperature, and are there any adverse effects from taking the fuse out?

The Viscous Heater is only supposed to come on to help heat the engine. Removing the fuse will disable it. Not sure if it will throw a code. It is also supposed to help maintain the engine temp when it is cold. I have maintained my engine temp at 190* in 20* F weather and never needed the VH. It does help the engine to warm up quicker and gives you heat faster in the winter. Most likely your thermostat is bad and the VH is running because your engine temp is too cold.

If your thermostat is bad, and you operating temp is around 150-160* F it will be running a lot.

Where is your temp gauge at? Mine was about 154* F. Here is a Pic (thanks GDE) The drawn in needle is where mine was always sitting (154* F according to scantool.

If your thermostat is bad I have a brand new one in the box from Jeep I will sell you for $75 (cheaper than you can buy it). I have since modified my thermostat housing and installed a 192* thermostat in my modified housing so I don't need the new Jeep one.

I also sell the modified thermostat housings with the 192* thermostat for $100 plus shipping. The advantage is you can choose your temp you want to run (192* F recommended by GDE) ann it is also easier maintenance in the future to change a thermostat because you do not have to unbolt the whole housing from the block and disconnect all those hoses again - Just remove 2 nuts, replace thermostat - Easy. :)

There is a refundable $100 core charge if you do not have an old housing to send prior to installation. That way I can send you one ready to put in and you can send me your old one and get your core money refunded.

according to your picture my temp gauge is reading just over the 176 degree mark, which i thought was normal.

176 is a properly functioning factory thermostat

Kap's 180 & 190 are mods - it should work better - but it's not stock.

I was thinking about it last night, but if the viscous heater is constantly turning on and off it is trying to maintain than 176 degree temp. Today I'm going to take the fuse out and see if the engine still maintains that temp. I'll report back later.

Buck,

You need to remove a relay.

If you are running 176* F according to the pic, it sounds like your T-stat is good.

FYI: I have created a switch to disable the AC compressor. You could disable the VH in the same way. Every time you have your fan on defrost, or defrost/feet, even on heat with out AC "on", the AC compressor runs. This sucks fuel economy also. I like running defrost to circulate air rather than vent in my face, and don't want the AC on.

The VH is relay # 36 fyi.

Here's my writeup for the switches. Like I said, you can do the same thing with the VH. I also made an ABS disable for off road use and a high beam override switch so i can have HB. LB, and fog lights all on at the same time.

Hope this helps you out,

- Mark

pulled the relay, no cel. and still runs right around 176 degrees. I'll look at that disable switch you made, it looks like a good idea.

There are instructions either on this site or the other KJ site to put some tape over a contact on the HVAC controls to disable the AC when the heat is directed to the footwells.

Very interesting thread, it has raised my awareness about operating temp. and am wondering if I've also got an issue...my temp. needle is on the graduation just cooler than the 176 degree graduation shown in the diagram. Do you think I have a thermostat issue here? My commute is pretty mellow, nothing over 50mph, lots of 30-40mph driving with a few stops. The temps have been in the 50's and 60's. Appreciate the feedback.

Kapalczynski, could you also lead me to the info. on how to install the switch that would allow me to run my high beams and fogs at the same time? Thanks a lot.
