Hey pros,

I'm sorry if this has been discussed already.

Lately I've been getting some strange sounds coming from the rear end of my 2003 KJ with corporate LSD.
When slowly backing-up out of my garage, about 50% of the time I will get this strange clunk clunk clunk clunk noise. It almost sounds like the grinding of two large gears which are slightly out of syncronization. You can really even feel the like somebody beating on the axle.
At first I didn't really care as Jeeps are known for their unusual sounds, but now this is starting to worry me.

Does this sound familiar ? Do you guys think this might be something with the clutchpack ?
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to remove the cover and visually inspect the gears. Hopefully I won't find much metal debris.

Later.

Welcome to the forum!

My first guess would be something to do with LSD as you mentioned. Some folks have found metal teeth (the gear type, not human) in the bottom of the diff after describing issues such as yours. Hopefully it isn't anything that serious.

Stuff to consider...How long has it been since you changed the diff oil? Did you include the friction modifier? Have you been through any deep water lately?

Change the rear end oil. Mine did that until I changed it. If I remember correctly, has to be changed every 12000 (have to look at the book again). I waited until 17000 to do mine and did not realize how quick the drain intervals were. Probably because of the aluminum dif. Some 4 wheel types needs the additive (mine didn't). Another thing i noticed that the front and rear oil rating were different from the factory. Change that real quick.
