I Plan on taking the family to the Coves next weekend, does anyone know if gaining access into the trail entrances is located on the eastend of the Butchjones parking entrance? and also if you need a permit and or fee area, or something to go back there. Thanks

Yes, the entrance is in the northeast corner of the Butcher Jones rec area - it goes across a cattle guard and out to the north. When I went out with phxtoad and AZScout last september there wasn't a fee involved, don't know if thats changed. It is a fun area, especially The Rolls. You can check out our trip in this thread: AZ Rolls 9-10-05. Have fun!

From the azvjc website:

Trail Rating: 2.5+ Location: Saguaro Lake, Mesa

At the Coves of Saguaro Lake, there are at least 4 coves to play in, on, and around. Many hill climbs provide a challenge to all levels of 4-Wheelers and vehicles.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

How to get there:
Bush Highway to Butcher Jones Recreation Area. Enter Butcher Jones parking area and go to back of lot to green cattle gate. Enter through gate and follow the trails. Be sure to close the gate. You are not required to pay the daily use fee unless you are using the parking area, beach and facilities.

If you are ever faced with too difficult a hill climb or descent, continue down the trail and you will usually find an easier one.

Post up a trip and maybe some other folks can join you.

You only have to pay a fee for parking in the parking lots and using the picnic areas. Otherwise you can drive past the self-pay station.

Have fun!
