Did the earlier engines have a vacuum operated flap like the VW TDI engines? That's what my '02 TDI has and it doesn't do anything except close at shutdown (no modulation for EGR).

Can' t speak for the older models, never seen one, but judging by the problem/failures on the 05-06 years with the mounts, why aggravate an apparent weak point with a rough shutdown?

Another BIG reason for the FCV is to prevent the chance of a run-away diesel. This used to be a bigger problem years ago, but it's still possible today.

As far as the rough shutdown...both of my CRDs (one that was bought new) were/are rough on shutdown even with the FCV working. Anybody who says you can't even notice the engine shutting down either has a freak CRD, or hasn't driven a gas vehicle lately. These things are rough.

Yea, it is pretty abrupt. Worse when you shut it down cold after a few seconds of idling.

No, nothing in the intake path like that.

What is your CRD doing exactly, that you are expecting something different? My vehicle doesn't shake when idling, it doesn't shake when I cut it off... And "abrupt" in shutting off an engine? That is what it is supposed to be - You stopped providing it fuel, so it stops rotating.

I'll try to get a video of the engine shutting down and post it - I have a remote starter so I can film from the front with the hood open.

Diesels are more abrupt than gas engines. They shut down so quickly that the belt-driven accessories can't stop as fast. That's why you get the violent shake at the last second. That's also why the Cummins engines commonly "squeal" upon shutdown. It's the belt slipping because the crank stopped so fast the accessories couldn't keep up. Gas engines are WAY smoother upon shutdown because they don't immediately stop when you turn off the key. There is actually a very brief delay while the pistons are slowing to a stop. If you had time-lapse video of the two side by side you'd see how different it is.

Obviously this is the reason for the FCV. To try and control some of that. But you can't totally stop it. It's inherent to the diesel design.

I don't see the big issue with the rough shutdown, mine has been that way for 45k miles now(bad FCV), no motor mount failures, nothing else bad, its just like a little rock of the engine right when it shuts off.

Maybe I'm just used to it b/c I put 150k miles on my previous ride, the TDI Jetta, and most of that was without the "FCV" version that they have. But I'm not feeling anything that I would be upset about on my CRD when I shut it off. About the engine stopping faster than the accessories... Are the accessories capable of that much of a dynamo operation that they could defeat the tension of the belt stopping them? I'm dubious about that.

But like Sam, I haven't needed to replace any motor mounts in 35k miles thus far, and with all the engine in-and-out that my CRD went through last year, I would think they might have mentioned if a mount was buggered in the process.

Ok, I'm done being silly. I do have a spare FCV that I have no intentions of using, as I have disabled mine in a 'permanent' way. How does $250 shipped sound?

I don't have any way of testing it, but it doesn't rattle like the one that was on my engine. The rattling one probably doesn't have any gears left.

Probably b/c he is holding out for a brand new one for more money, rather than the one that I offered with only 33k on it (the mileage on the CRD when I bought it and installed the SEGR the first week). To Each His Own.

Ok, I didn't know MPA was offering it for that price. However, I was saying $250 with shipping, and this is a heavy little bugger. MPA will probably want $35 for the shipping, considering that they charged me $10 for the vacuum modulator which weighs less than 4 ounces and is about 3" x 2".

This thing is about 3-4 lbs, and will need a decent box to protect it. But what amazes me is this: It seems like nobody wants to haggle anymore for stuff!
The joy of finding a good deal is getting a little bit more for your side, whether you are the buyer or seller. For a buyer, if I find something on Craigslist I'm interested in, the FIRST thing I do is offer them half of what they are asking.

I know they aren't gonna accept that (although I DID have one guy who accepted my first low-ball offer... Dunno why) but they come back with a counter-offer... And we haggle. It is the same for selling. I'm putting my "first best guess" out there of what I'd like to get for something. Don't like that number? Come back with a different offer! The beauty of a marketplace like ours (here on LOST) is that we aren't forced to buy or sell... So we can work toward mutually acceptable deals.

So Dave - Want that FCV for a good deal? Try me, you never know what I'm gonna say yes to. Besides - I have no need for it anyway, I'm not putting any more emissions crap into my engine. It is just taking up space in my trailer and could do some good for the group here.

Geordi,

You should be able to verify in vehicle is your spare FCV is functioning correctly, it might make it easier to sell. Just plug it in to the harness and let it sit near the open area behind the battery. After running the engine for a few seconds, shut it down and the FCV throttle plate should close during the key-off and then open back up a few seconds later.
