Yup... it's a moccasin alright. You can see the stripe running from nose down the side. Sure sign of a moccasin. Best to leave these guys alone. They have a really nasty disposition and are not afraid = bite and trip to hospital. Take a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agkistrodon_piscivorus

I was pretty sure it was in Florida, but didn't know where by the vegetation. The Withlacoochee State Forest is near Brooksville, FL. Pretty pictures, pretty place. I'll have to check it out sometime.

Methinkns it's a Banded Water Snake (a.k.a. Nerodia fasciata or Southern Water Snake). They are very commonly mistaken for water moccasins. They look about the same but don't have the moccasin's triangular head shape. Can't entirely tell the head shape from your camera angle, but from what I see, I'd guess Banded Water Snake.

Here's a photo of one (Banded Water Snake coloring can range from charcoal gray to brown):

I tried to blow up the picture to get a better look at it's head, but the resolution is not good enough to get a better idea of the head. I still think, based on what appears to be the stripe down the head and the fat, stubby body that it is a moccasin. The banded water snake doesn't have the stipe and is thinner that a moccasin. Banded water snakes also have a nasty disposition. Either way I would not try to catch it bare handed. I have scrape scars on my chest where a banded water snake bit me when I was younger. I was holding him and he was absolutely calm. Then, all of a sudden, he turned and bit me in the chest.

This is what my biology teacher said,
"Definitely looks like a cottonmouth aka water moccasin. 95% sure from the pic. It has the eye stripe, heavy body, and correct color & pattern. Pythons have elongated heads and shorter, less tapered tails. How big?"
