My front driver side wheel skirt and bumper were scratched this past weekend by a fast moving and evading NYC Yellow Taxi cab that was long gone before I realized what had happened.

Anyway, I would like to attempt the remair myself and would like to know what product I could use to remove the stuck on yellow taxi cab paint without removing the original paint on the plastic body parts and bring back the shine?

The paint on the plastic is different then what's on the body as it needs to flex with the plastic. So it's softer and must be treated gentler then the harder paint on the steel body.

There are products with varying amounts of abrasive and you should start with the least. I'll try to list in order what I would use that I keep in my arsonal.

A "Cleaner Wax".
A "Glaze" meant to cover light scratches.
A "Polish". Use light pressure.
"Rubbing compound". Last resort, BE VERY carefull with this.

You'll be able to tell quickly how much "yellow cab" you'll be able to remove but with luck and patience most all of it will come off.
After you've got it off use a good wax to restore the shine.

I can tell you from experience on my bumper that OEM touch up paint that works fairly well on the body but not so well on a small scratch on my bumper :banghead:

Have had good results removing paint using Hickory tree bark followed by buffing with a Cedar Tree.

Ridenby,

Sounds like a recipe to create a showroom finish for sure, I bet that it can only be achieved during gale force winds.

My son ran over a road sign with the GT once, and only damage was the green paint from the sign post. I took it off with some mild rubbing compound that I got from paintscratch.com. I then hit it with some rattlecan clearcoat that had flex in it and it is good as new.

Yeah those fender flares tend to get scratched up... Why not take them all off and have them resprayed? Do the front and rear bumper covers while your at it. Its all very easy to remove in about an hour and a half. Take it to a shop and have them shoot it in a booth. May not be the cheapest solution, but it keeps the Libby looking crispy.

Leave it like it is and tell everybody that you got it from pushing a yellow Hummer out of a mud hole.

Good advice. I need some pictures and directions on how to disconnect the parts. Where can I find directions and schematics?
