One day a week ago I noticed that in 2nd gear the engine would go all the way up to 2,200 rpms before shifting into 3rd from 2nd. It did that even when I babied it (when normally it would shift around say 1,700 rpms.) On the other hand if I hit the gas harder it would go past 2,200 so it’s not like it was in the “limp home mode” I have read about. Odder still if I would let off the gas completely while driving on flat ground the rpm’s wouldn’t fall off and let the engine just coast, it would hold the engine speed (I guess engine braking) like it would with a manual transmission. The engine temp gauge never rose and it wasn’t like I was in stop and go traffic or mashing on the gas that might cause the transmission to overheat.
I have since checked all my (synthetic) fluids and they are all clean and not burnt. Engine has another 1,000 before a due change and the transmission has another 20,000 miles before I need to replace (I do 30,000 mi. intervals on my transmission.) It only happened once and the temps were in the 90’s and on that day I also got caught in a crazy end of the world rain storm on a highway that did cause some flash flooding. There were a few roads I had to drive down that had bumper deep standing water. My issues started about an hour after all that.
Any thoughts? I have 65,000 on the Jeep.
