Hello,

I own a '06 Liberty 4x4 with the 3.7. Recently it did not start in the parking lot, and I had to jump it. I figured that the battery needed to be replaced. I was about 3 blocks from the repair shop when the engine died again (of course on one of the busiest streets in LA).

I went to the repair shop and, besides a new battery, they're recommending replacing the idle air control valve, speed sensor, and cleaning the fuel injectors. All of this makes sense to me (more or less).

They also told me that there was some sort of recall for the Liberty where the dealership needs to flash the computer. I was never notified about this (even when I had brought it to the dealer a year or so ago). I called the dealer and he is telling me that this flash was not covered by the warranty and that I needed to pay for it. I'm a bit confused about what the purpose of this flash is though. Is anyone familiar with a recall for the Liberty that would involve flashing the computer's ROM? Does anyone know how the dealerships handle this? Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg

To find out if your Jeep is due any recall, go to jeep.com and type in your VIN.

When it died was the engine trying to idle?
if so - I'd replace the battery and see how it runs.

These beasts are different - if the battery doesn't produce a high enough voltage - the computer turns off. You may have some reserve current - but the computer is based on the voltage. when you jump started it - you provided a higher voltage - and the the engine was running fast enough for the alternator to produce more - it stayed on - the engine slows down the alternator slows down - the computer turns off.
Idle air control, speed sensor, injectors, and the new flash may be needed - but they shouldn't cause the engine to stop. (well speed sensor might - but it wouldn't run for a little while and then stop)

battery first and then see how it goes - you might want a second opinion on the rest.

i had that recall done in june of 2006. i believe it is the f-21 recall. dealer siad something about battery drain in some instances? they didn't know anymore.

but recalls are always free, even out of warranty! so ask at another dealer and check your vin # on jeeps web site! mike

Recalls should be done free.

Idle air control may not be bad either. I don't know about the jeep but my old nissan maxima needed one and the problem it had was that the engine wouldn't run at a steady idle and would shut off if you didnt give it some gas. being it was a 5 speed manual I had to almost drive it with 3 feet untill it was fixed. was tricky to do being we only have 2 feet to work all 3 pedal at once.

Hey Guys,

Thanks so much for all of the feedback... so it turns out that there was some miscommunication that the recall re. the computer flash had been performed a couple years ago. So that explains that... in the meantime, apparently the computer diagnostics report from the dealer also said there was an issue with the idle air control valve so that has been replaced (any way to diagnose this besides the computer report?). The battery was replaced also (the old one was non functional). For the last few days the car ran fine so I was happy... but then yesterday at the gas station I lifted the hood to check my oil and noticed some clear fluid leaking out of the top caps of the battery. Not much. Dried it off and today the same thing. So looks like I still have some ways to go on my repair journey. Not sure if it is that there is an issue with the new battery or if it is just being overcharged? Interestingly with the old battery I never noticed this. Can replacing an idle air control valve cause overcharging? Or is this related to the alternator? Both mechanics told me that the alternator was OK previously. So being diagnosed right now. Will let you guys know what the issue is.

Thanks again for all of the advise. I really appreciate it... esp. the details re. the recall as I wanted to make sure that it was performed.

Warm regards,

Greg

The 'voltage regulator' is in the PCM computer - it measures voltage and the battery temperature sensor - and it should stop charging if the battery overheats - you might check and see if there's a sensor wire hanging around that looks like it should be against the battery.

Just wanted to thank everyone again for the feedback. Turned out to be a defective battery and the car is charging fine. So that was good news.

Best regards,

Greg
