I am having some trouble with the CRD today, the motor had no power, if i punched the gas the rpms would go up to 3,000 and peg and seemed to struggle to switch gears, last week i did an ORM but it has been running fine till today, i plugged the MAFS back in and shut down the truck, then it seemed to be running normal again, and i checked my MAP sensor and it was clean, any suggestions?

Have you changed the fuel filter yet? Start there.

I've personally not had it but more then a few have. It sounds like the "LIMP MODE" to me and normally there's no CEL but since you've done the ORM you've got a CEL from that.

But definetly replace the fuel filter first and NAPA has them, you don't need to go to the dealer :SOMBRERO:

Lift pump reduces strain on the CP3 and helps the filter go longer.
Trying to move fuel through the filter under vacuum SUCKS literally.
Look through the threads in the CRD Tech section and pick the one you like.
Trying to control air leaks with a vacuum is like a very attractive young woman in a cell block of convicted rapists not getting at least razzed.
But like the gal in the cell block, there are DieHards who love the original Chrysler Bean Counter Engineering and love testing their luck. Not me.
Treat the Anti Lift Pump talking points, advanced Bean Counter Engineering theory, and rhetoric as pure propaganda.

Besides, if you add the lift pump, you will find the leak and may get a new fuel head with filter for free like I did.
Fuel Leaks are are defects, right?
Good luck.

Pull out your fuel heater plug from the filter head and see if it's wet with fuel. If it is, that's your problem - leaks. If it's dry, just replace your fuel filter without messing around with lift pumps! Just do the filter first.

Mine use to do this constantly the dealership hunted for my problem for a week before they gave up. So i order the Racor and replaced the factory unit and haven't have a problem in 2 years almost. No need for a lift pump since to much work for to little pay off.

Did you get this problem fixed. I believe i'm having the same issue with my 2004 and would be interested what the resolution is/was and what was done to resolve it.

P.S. Are you getting any smoke out of the exhaust

Thanks

im getting very light smoke out of the exhaust now probably because i hooked the MAFS back up, i just read all the codes on my MAC tools code reader and i had the following CEL codes

P0113- which is intake air temp. circuit input (most likely to due to ORM)
P0102- which is MAFS low input (most likely to due to ORM)
P0093- FUEL SYSTEM LEAK DETECTED, and then it describes it as a large leak on my code reader

the P0093 CEL code was on there 2 times, i cleared all the codes with code reader, drove around a lil bit, parked it revved the engine and tried looking for any looks, checked filter head connections they were all dry, the codes have not come back up yet and i let it run in my driveway for about 30 mins as well.

So I waited til now to take the jeep out and once again it died as soon as I let off the fuel pedal, plugged in the code reader and sure enough code p0093 which is fuel system leak detected is on there, but no CEL, it seems to be only doin it after I drive and let it cool down, then when I take it out again later it dies right at the stop sign at the top of the hill on my street and I have to prime it to get it to start, then it runs fine after I do that.

Someone told me that it runs first because it has good fuel, but it sucks in air as it does so. Once you stop the jeep and let it cool, the air rises to the top of your filter head and then causes the problem. I could be dead wrong though.

At least it sounds like a fuel issue. I had tge limp mode once because I let the filter go too long and I hammered the Jeep from a stop. I must have burned more fuel than I could get in. I changed the filter that day and everything was golden...

Now I have a rough starting idle though whichg I think is close to your issue. I think I suck air in from a leak somewhere. I have the original fuel head at 81k. I need to change it soon.

ye that would make to me, im at 52,500 miles now and as far as know its the original fuel head, i unplugged all the harnesses going to the fuel head and there was no evidence of diesel, but if its sucking in air i guess i would see and leaking, does anyone know how much for a racor kit and were to buy it?

This was a good writeup - with links
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=36977&start=0

although the new style head from Mopar ~$100 including the wiring tail & ~20 min install
(Racor filters are better)

I checked the electrical for leaking and found nothing at the filter head, and the pump has already been replaced on it before by the previous owner, is there another place the filter head could be leaking? Also idk if its factory but I have a fuel water seperator and it looks a previous owner modified it so it could be drained and the fuel fittings look aftermarket on it, and it also has a cheap inline filter on one of the lines goin to the fuel water seperator. The drain line for it runs to bottum of the front bumper, and there is a valve under the air intake tube that allows you to drain the water out. I checked the valve and made sure it was closed. It has to be getting air In fuel from somewere

99 people here out of 100 will blame the fuel head for air leaks :juggle: I'm the 100th and had air in fuel problems from mile 9 the day I bought my jeep new. The problem is they used gasoline fuel lines that has a pressurized system with a pump in the tank. Some dealers early in the life of 05/06 crd's were smart enough to replace the fuel lines including those plastic disconnects with o rings back above the tank :jester: I found out just how flimsy they are when I dropped the tank to put in a lift pump :JEEPIN:

More then myself think with air accumulating constantly in the fuel filter head the heater plug that's supposed to be imersed in fuel is high and dry and overheats causing the plug to melt :2cents:

Don't really expect a Chrysler/Jeep dealer to find your problem and you'll not be disappointed. Now you know why it was traded in :-)r
