I know I've seen it on here before, but I can't find how you can tell whether your tranny is a 42rle or a 45rfe. My tranny just died and I'm trying to find a good rebuilt one, but I want to double check and make sure I'm getting the right one. Thanks!

Also, not being a mechanic, are the two easily interchangeable, or are there different connections that make it difficult/impossible???

I think the ONLY KJs to get the 45RFE/545RFE were the 2002 3.7s, and the 2005-2006 CRDs. Otherwise, you have the 42RLE.

Great! Isn't there a way you can tell by counting the bolts on the pan too?

I think there's a label on the side of the transmission (same place they put the stickers when doing factory reprograms, etc.).

the year info is "almost correct"

My 03 has a 45RFE and an 02 type throttle body

the early 03's had the possibility with being either so you'll have to count the bolts or check the label

the 45RFE has 13 bolts on the pan, the 42RLE has 15

good luck rolling the dice :)

this info is correct after i edited :), when i went to the parts store and all they had were RFE filters it said on the screen 15 ct bolt pattern, i went out and counted mine and it is 13, so i went to another parts store that carried the RLE filter and it did not specify the bolt ct but i checked and verified with a buddy with the RFE, and the count on that one is 15

lol sorry

We've had it backwards a few times ever since I talked to troy about mine like a year ago, and I've had trouble keeping it straight since

I never did get a correct count on my bolts until I went out with a dang paint marker before I got it serviced the first time and painted the head of the bolts as I counted

I've since had mine serviced so regardless of my counting abilities (should probably go back to kindergarten) I know what's in there since there's filter differences

I think several people have had the same problem and it boiled down to a filter PN or a label :P

I can tell ya this much though! One or the other has one or the other # of bolts!

I've seen multiple felpro gasket match printouts that had 15 for 42 and 45's so going by those it's quite easy to make mistakes
