Bosch shop should have the bolts too, bring an old one with you as an example. Chances are, they used a torque-to-yield design like on the VW TDI. Not too bad, BUT you can't reuse them at all. Telling that to some mechanics however, gets you a blank stare. Run away from those mechanics.

I remember reading an article in Diesel Power mag several years back where they upgraded the injectors on a CRD. I'll look and see if I can find out what type injectors would be an upgrade, just in case it's necessary. Don't know how involved it would be though - ECU tuning, etc.

LMK when you find that issue... I've been buying that mag on and off for a few years when it looked interesting, but only ever seen the Grand Cherokee in it, not our CRD.

I'd be interested in upgrades for the injectors as well. On the TDI, upgrading the nozzles at the base of the injector to a slightly larger opening was an easy way of finding more power. I wonder (hope) that something like that is available for us too.

I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is the injectors are clean.
The bad news is that the injectors were fine.never thought I'd say that

I think I'm all out of options at this point.

Don't know what to say at this point. The mechanic said that they should have all been dry,and fuel is passing or something.
I asked if the high pressure fuel pump might had slipped time(my dad's theory),and he said the pump is not a timed device, just keeps fuel in the rail.
He said if it's not the computer at this point,it's time to pull the head.

Sorry for not hittin' you back Raff, was at a side job after work to pay right back to the diesel shop. :banghead: Feel like telling him to just keep'em.

Been a long day.

Can you make video of the engine cranking without the injectors?

What about a broken valve spring on one cylinder? That could happen randomly, just like this. The knocking could be the piston hitting the valve every time it comes up. Is there were a way to identify if the knock comes at TDC?

The Diesel mechanic at the injector place said it could be one of the rockers might have let a pushrod loose or something about the piston but I couldn't remember that part.

Does this sound plausible?

Rained good today,I'll get to that video up tomorrow if dry out.

Not really plausible. It's an overhead cam engine, so no pushrods to be found in it.

Ok, so now we know it's not the injectors.

let's wait for the crank-with-no-injectors video.

I thought about that too...

Bub, you got an air compressor? We could do a leak test.

You put the piston in tdc (put a long rod or screwdriver in the injector hole, you can see by it's length when you are at tdc of that particular piston) and gun compressed air into the combustion chaimber through the injector hole.

Don't have to use much PSI, put a rag around the gun so you get as little a leak as possible, then listen if you hear air escaping into the intake or exhaust. Take off the CAC hoses to hear it better.
If you hear air coming from both ends you need to rotate the engine 360º. (then it was in exhaust stroke instead of compression)

What's the purpose of all this: you can check if there is a valve problem before pulling the cams and head etc.

Best thing would be to use GDE's drilled out injector for this though. But a moist rag will probably seal the airgun enough for the job.

Thanks Toni,I would like to check compression, but not sure I would know what i'm listening for.
Mabe I should get the tool from Keith.Would the tool have a gauge to detect leakage?

Here is the latest video:Turning over without injectors.
You don't see it but at first there was a light misty spray coming from the pistons I guess.

Are you able to hear any ticking when cranking it over...there does not seem to be any abnormal sounds like in the first video when the engine showed a loud knocking. A small borescope would be ideal, these are hard to find unless you know someone local. We can ship the injector, but it does not have a pressure gauge on it yet. Let me know if you want it and I will get it set-up properly. The compression test will only tell part of the story. It would be nice to record the pressure trace of each cylinder for 720 degrees rotation to understand if all the valves are opening properly.

Is it hard to pull the valve cover and check valves opening and closing, springs, rockers?
