Plan on keeping the CRD past 100k Miles?

Very close to 100k (93kl) and I am on the fence about keeping it past 100k. Write now I can get between $9 and $10k for it in trade against a 2010 Liberty. The 100k service is going to set me back $1300. They are discounting the 2010's significantly. Given the price difference between RUG and Diesel operating cost are about the same.

I've already passed 100K which includes lots of offroad in every clime and place. No tunes, no bypasses and the cheapest diesel I can find.

The CRD is an excellent runner if you don't assume you're so much smarter than the idiots that built it. :wink:

I am glad you have had better luck with yours than I have mine, though I plan on driving mine until it falls apart (bypasses done after two EGRs and two stets of CAC hoses, the suncoast is the result of the three prior TCs dying). Just goes to show the CRD has a lot of potential, with a little bit of luck.

I am on board with Stoutdog. My CRD has already cost me significant money/time in the shop. I now feel that I have a reliable vehicle. However....as soon as this thing starts being a money pit again it's gone. Until then, I'll drive it. Currently at 88,000 miles and counting....

x2. Most of my mods have been in the interest of trouble-free longevity rather than pleasure. Although I wouldn't mind if it got totalled (as long as no one is hurt) because my next vehicle will be a CRD WK. . . .

After 8k in replacing the engine... I'd say mine is ALREADY a money pit. But at the same time, I'm stomping out any gremlins that I find, and believe that I have a solid vehicle. I have the special tools, a shop that has taken this engine apart (deeply) like 3 times... So maintenance doesn't scare me. It is tweaked and modded all the way that I like it now.

Unless something surprising happens, I'm probably going to keep this until the wheels fall off, even if I get a new vehicle at some point and the CRD becomes a toy.

Next mod - Figuring out a way (if possible) to stuff a small generator power head into the engine bay and make the engine into a generator for film sets.

How about a front PTO shaft?
Since the 2.8L doubles as a marine/industrial engine, VM might already have an adapter. Generator could hang out front with brackets mounted in the same location as front tow hooks or a front hitch. Check out the fabrication section for ideas.

All my mods are to enhance longevity and towing capacity.

Mine has 93K of hard driving, most towing a overloaded 3,000 lb trailer round cross country trips (8 x 6,000 = 48,000) to move from the east coast to the great northwest.

Only trouble,
1. air in fuel, (fixed with lift pump)
2. A/C leak, (warranty)
3. MAP in early life, (warranty and kept fixed with ORM)
4. cracked turbo oil pressure line, (extended warranty).

After everything this rig hasn't cost me much even with the mods I done to it. :JEEPIN:

I dont think I will keep it much longer and am seriously considering selling it. I don't want to spend $ 700 on tires and an additional $ 5-600 on a GDE tune (which in my opinion it needs to keep the egr at bay). In addition, I am concerned for parts availability and finding someone competent to work on it. While I can do minor repair, things like the timing belt are beyond my patience and skills. It has been (in general) a positive experience, but I think it may be time to change. The only issue is what to replace it with. As I have no interest in the alleged Mahindra vehicle I don't think there is another diesel in my immediate future. I will look at the 4 door wrangler, but am not happy with the way Chryselr handled the CRD mess and am less than inclined to go that route. So, I'm starting to look around and by the way-salesmen are very and I mean very aggressive at present.

I've rolled that very question around alot here lately. Guess no matter what its gonna cost...either in repair costs in this thing, or lost value driving another rig off the lot.
I like the Libby, even though I'm facing the timing belt change and god knows what else in 20k miles.
Got the light on right now for #2 glow plug...maybe thats my warning...I dunno...but guess I'll keep it and chance it.
If I'm wrong I'll never hear the end of it from the wife. She wants to dump it now...... :ALONE:

My CRD is my everday vehicle but I have two others that can be.

I have decided to be the one to push the timing belt change to 150K.

Now at 115,000

I'm hoping that I can keep mine past 200,000 miles or more. I have only had it a year now but man I love this Jeep. I liked the Outback I had before this but it just don't compare in what it can do. I feel like its the vehicle I was ment to drive.... Yes it had querks but so did the Subaru so did most cars I owned all but the Honda and the Nissan. those were plain and predictable.

I don't mind the parts thing I figure it will work out. I will find a good diesel mechanic to handle the Major work I can't do. Hopefully when I do have to replace it I can get another diesel Jeep.

I'm on the same page and milage as LibertyCRD. As disgusted as I am with having to replace the turbo and hoses, its got incredible grunt and milage compared to any 4x4 in its class. I still believe if SHTF there is some viable options in diesel fuels.

109k, Just dropped it off for timing belt change

Biggest problem: Turbo and hoses replaced (warranty) 63k. Kind of worked out for me as I would have had to replace the hoses anyways, and now it has the supposedly better OEM ones on it. Had to change wheel bearings, but I wouldnt call that a CRD issue.

Will keep until it either falls appart, becomes too expensive to repair, or gets repoed by bank.

I got no choice, I paid 20K for this boat anchor and already drop arround 4k in it.. Got only 55K miles on the counter so if I'm lucky and he don't fall apart I get about 4 years of service out of it.

In the mid time I keep a eye on Toyota I just wish they built a Diesel Fj and a pickup version to kick the Chrysler/Jeep division a.... a bit

56K on my '06. I have had it for 2 months now. Like it a lot so I plan on keeping it. I am not worried too much about parts because it is a fairly common engine, if not here, elsewhere. I am thinking of stockpiling TB replacement parts as they are available. But, 44K miles is a long ways off.

Brother in law is a mechanic. Stockpiling the parts might not be a bad idea. Maybe I should have. As it is, the only things I could afford was the belt, tensioner, 2 pulleys, timing cover gasket and tool rental. About 350.00 for the parts. Somewhat less for the labor (I hope), but I haven't got that bill yet.

I know not doing the water pump will cost me down the road, but at 109k I just can't wait for more funds.

Plan on keeping the CRD past 100k Miles?
