Clogged catalytic converter?

Has anyone had overheating and drivability issues caused by a clogged catalytic converter?

What we normally call a cat is really a partical trap that catches soot and burns it off on a good run down the highway.

Have you checked the other normal problem areas :?:

Do you actually have a driveability problem and if so have you checked for air on the fuel filter? If you have a 05 there were some that apparently had bad or incorrect fan clutches. They appear to be working but side by side to a working one it's night and day. One owner here actually has (had?) two and his heated up going up his long steep driveway and his wife's didn't. Another member, another set of eyes, and he sat them side by side and on the overheating one the fan was obviously not moving the same amount of air.

I had a cat fail in my buick once. The car was driving along and then just lost all power. It kept running but it wouldn't go over 30 kph. I was on my way up the ambassador bridge in Detroit in January. Not Nice. Anyway GM has an 8 year warranty on Cat's so they replaced it free. The car was about 5 - 6 years old and I thought it was going to cost $2k.

Just to clarify, we do NOT have a Diesel Particulate Filter. We have a normal old two way Cat-Con. It is virtually impossible to plug the cat in this vehicle. One WOT from a stop sign will get any soot out.

I have a new radiator, fan clutch, waterpump, and thermostat. So the cooling system has been ruled out. Also the last time it over heated the temperature gauge was at 195. And my aux radiator fan is working properly.

Judging from the inside of my OEM muffler, i would say it is very possible to clog up the cat on these things. :shock:

Stock muffler can produce up to 5 PSI of back pressure, 5PSI of back pressure on the Turbo will reduce your boost.
Get rid of the stock muffler, and replace with 2 1/2" free flow muffler or straight pipe, and get rid of the restrictor flange on the back of the cat. Results, 0.0PSI back pressure and quicker higher boost.

This is a no brainer.

There was a TSB where did a they flash to change the temperature guage reading :SOMBRERO:

When was the TSB for the temp gauge. I'm guessing it was already done when I got my last EGR valve last year. "That made number three for my jeep." And it turns out it is already bad. darn things fail two months after the warrenty runs out.

Years ago but don't assume it was done. I believe it was a flash to the BCM (Body Control Module) Maybe there's something on it tech bulletin section

I have the same problem on my 06.It would barely go up a steep bridge. I thought it was the torque converter going out. Luckily I got an honest transmission mechanic. I have an EGR CEL so I'm not sure if they will replace it under the 8/80,000 warranty or blame it on the EGR. I'm deciding whether or not to take it in or ream out the converter. Any opinions?

I believe it is in the warranty booklet (my jeep is currently in the shop, with manuals, FINALLY getting the 100k tune-up

) either there or in the manual, you will find that there is separate warranty for the exhaust system, especially the cat, whereas they must fix if it fails before X mileage (100k comes to mind). This is not the 3/36 nor the 5/70 warranty stuff.

If you do any WOT driving, I can't imagine it clogging that much. An easy check would have someone run it up to fast idle while you hold your hand at the end of the exhaust (not on the pipe itself, :oops:

). When my CAT clogged on my 360 cu. in. Dodge 1500 engine, you could tell there was something wrong by the lack of flow coming out the back when you gave it a little throttle. Took her in to the shop and, sure 'nuff, the honeycomb had collapsed and clogged the cat.
