So I was driving my usual long trip home and I was getting assaulted by bugs like crazy. So I pushed my windshield washer lever to give it a little juice and clean some of the fresh bug guts off my windshield. As I do so I hear a terrible crackling and static (like a bad walkie-talkie) and then silence! So I turn off the radio and turn it back on. Still nothing. I fiddle with some settings to see if anything will get it back. Still nothing, so I turn it off and on again. Wham! it works...

So I was checking all the speakers adjusting it front left, right and rear left, right. It appears that even though it seemed like the majority of the noise (static crackling) came from the right, it now seems the left side is more muffled.

I've had speakers go in cars before, but never quite like this.

How many of you have had your speakers go in your Libby and did they act like this.
Has anyone had an electrical gremlin like this where you do a random function like wash your windshield and it affects the radio?
How many of you have replaced your speakers because you thought your speakers might be about to do something like this?

With the speakers fairly well hidden in the dash panels, are these panels easy to take on and off to replace the speakers? I've had some vehicles I've owned that I've replaced speakers on be a real pain in the @#$, so I just want to know what I'm getting into :)

My To Do list now: (JEEP only, the Honey-do list is MUCH longer!)
Replace Fan Blower resister
Figure out electrical gremlin/ replace speakers
finally get around to installing skid plate for T-case that has been sitting in my garage for a few months now.
Research my lift/ suspension upgrade
Decide on new tires before the white stuff comes

I have to get this done before the JEEP adds more to my list. The first two items have both been within the last couple of weeks, ugh!

EDIT:
Sorry, I should have looked at the Tech section for the specifics on the speakers. I see now there is a decent amount of info on that. However, I'd still like to know the answers to most of my questions. And mods, if this should be moved to the Electronic section, please do so. Thanks!

I am trying to respond via iPhone.
1-easy to take off door panels. You need a philips screwdriver and some type of panel prybars or flathead screwdriver(s). I pop mine off a lot lol. When my speakers went out it was the cone coming off. I picked up some liquid nails and put a bead around it all around the outside. Waited a day and all was good after that.
I think i did a write up somewhere on here.

Simple work. Oh and there are 2 screws to take out to get the panel off one in the arm rest and the other is behind the door handle.

Is this the right section for this inquiry?

When mine started doing that, it was actually the headunit going bad, wasn't long after freakshow noises like you describe that I'd be going down the road and the HU would turn off completely , replaced the HU with a kenwood mp3u, cd head unit with detachable face (who cares) and a USB port (woowoo!) with the wiring adapter kit, antenna adapter, and dash fascia for about 120, and a set of pioneer speakers for about 120? i don't really remember on the speakers

no complaints what so ever with the sound output or quality, it's been a year and still love it

sounds like HU going more than speakers to me too. My dad's old Ford Exploder did that. I nice HU from Crutchfield took care of that. I prefer crutchfield to other mail order places or retail if you are going to install yourself because they give you the kits and adaptors to install it along with instructions and phone support as long as you own the equipment. Others charge extra for the install parts. shipping is low priced too. another bonus is if you ever trade the vehicle and keep the equipment to install in the next they will suport that too all you do is buy the kit for the new vehicle.

Thanks for the responses. I actually have a set of speakers (ironically the correct size) and a HU MP3/usb/ cd/ detachable face that I bought for my 61 ford that I was going to custom make a console and mounting boxes for, but because I couldn't back the Ford out of the garage (major fix that I haven't accrued the money to fix yet). So I may see if I can get a hold of some inexpensive HU adpaters/ kit/ etc. to put it in and check to see if that is it. Worse case scenario, I end up having to buy another new one for my Ford later. I bought a pair of 6 1/2", a pair of 6x9", and a HU for right at $100 on clearance!

I do really like Crutchfield, I've ordered from them in the past and have had great luck. I also know that even though I've heard of really bad experiences with Best Buy, I seem to have great luck with them.

I noticed my right rear speaker going on / off and static. I was thinking bad connection but could it possibly be the HU? I will check wire near door hinges as they frequently break (at least on VW's) in that area due to bending when door opened and closed.

Again, Thanks All!

I replaced my head unit over the weekend (still awaiting the antenna adapter) and already the sound is way better. For some reason though even with the bass cranked up on the new head unit, it doesn't seem to put out quite as much (seemingly). I'm wondering now what the wattage is of the factory HU. I'm wondering if the one I put in has less power than the factory?

Overall though the sound is WAY better with the new HU.

I'm still likely to replace the speakers soon, but this will help get me by longer.

Xodius - Did you ONLY use liquid nails for the replacement speaker? I took the door panel off and noticed it is only a 3 tab attement for the factory speaker, the replacements I have are 4 hole and they don't line up, ugh. I can modify to fit (I think), but I'm going to have to dedicate a little more time to it.
