Would love to take pictures but the jeep is too dirty. Winter here and there's calcium everywhere in the streets to melt the snow. The darn stuff sticks everywhere, not nice on a black liberty. I will get it clean and take pictures soon. The next mod I'm planning is the in-tank lift pump. So far, so good, the little tractor feels great. I will try the suspension on the highway tomorrow. I just tried it in my neighborhood (residential roads covered with a mix of ice, snow and sleet) which I could feel every bump with the old suspension. With the OME, I tought my bum was in a Cadillac as smooth as it felt. Big surprise considering the tension on those springs. The alignment is now schedule for Friday afternoon and all the suspension lift will be over and done with. Next: lift pump!!!

I wish we the US would use MgCl or CaCl on roads. NaCl should be on the table... not the pavement!

Screw that sauce, pay someone with a wall mount to do it. It's way too risky IMO!! I would never touch a spring compressor!!

yeah, thats about the equivalent of cleaning a loaded and cocked shotgun, with the barrel balanced against your forehead

but it's ok because you're not going to clean around the trigger.. right?

My GM tech bud said to chain the assembly to something heavy. How about a welding table?

much better than nothing at all, still possible for things to become deadly projectiles

ya talkin about a spring that requires atleast 300 lbs of force to compress it an inch after the preload has been taken up

i'm no engineer but that's a crap ton of energy dispensed into something that maybe weighs a pound if the compressors break

which.. they do

i'd say the thread style compressors are suitable for our worn STOCK coils and nothing more and heck, you can compress those with your hands in some cases, a ratchet strap at worst

brand new lift coils? i'd straight up leave the shop and wait outside

the chain pretty much helps keep the business ends away from you and other people/things and helps you keep it oriented in a safer direction

difference in the threaded and the wall/roller units is that it cages the top by bolting the compressor to the strut plate then has the usual coil grabbers at the bottom that are slightly adjustable

I ended up buying a set from Harbor Freight and a set from Checker/O'reillys. 4 is better than 2! I wouldn't want to do more than my medium OME's. I lived this long with only a few broken bones(fingers and wrist) and I have all my digits. I want to keep it that way.

We don't use coil compressors at all. We've got a small 20-ton shop press over in the corner of the garage. Makes the CRD coils look like they came off a radio controlled toy. Top plate off, release, new parts, compress, top plate on, thread the nut, done. Done it a few times now.

I guess if the $$$$$$$ is there I might get a chance to see the 790s get the big squeeze this holiday season

If only people could see the results of what happens when a coil thats compressed comes loose! They would never even try with cheap crap compressors etc. Its not a pretty site when someone loses half their face.
But....they will try, post pictures like above and say see I did it with no problems. One of my 790s came loose at the shop I use, and they have a regular hydraulic compressor!

That's exactly what happened years ago at the shop I worked at. A mechanic did loose half of his face, an eyeball and many years of reconstructive surgery. His face still looks like he hit a wall nose first doing a hundred mph, can't eat right or even talk right. The insurance company made us buy the wall mount cage style, it still made my rear pucker using it after seeing what happened! To think there are guys that do compress spring using cable, chains or even muffler clamps too   Yep I will wait outside the shop, thank you.

I have done it myself the way tonycrd's photo shows, however I would strongly advise against it, and wouldn't do it again. Paid to have my wifes coils compressed and assebled, didn't cost much, and didn't risk my life at all!

Ok I'll supply the spring ( have an extra OME laying here) and we'll rent some cheapy compressors, now all we need is an actor to play the part of someone getting their head knocked off.
Anyone want to be a movie star????
Techman????? You'll be famous for a long time :goink:
