 Post subject: loud ticking sound from 2.8 CRD

2005 crd limited 4x4 11,000 km engine has loud ticking sound like when an engine is low on oil but my engine oil level is fine I only run sunoco gold diesel in it sound seems to come and go but today it won't go away. same ticking sound my hemi engine had only a little louder anyone else have this problem

Mines been ticking too before and after the oil change. My CSVT ticks too but its the injectors, I'm assuming its the same thing on these things.

i get a ticking from the engine that comes and goes, sounds like it comes from under the engine? i asked a tech at the dealer once and he said it was the oil pump. i figure its part of the design.

Mine ticks really loud but only after I've driven it and then let it sit for a few hours and get in to start it again. Then it'll tick loud. But it seems to go away after a few minutes. I haven't noticed it much this winter but that's probably because my windows are always up. 8)

the sound is like a stuck lifter had the same sound from 97 chev 3500 with the 6.5 diesel right before it blew up

I hear the same thing, quite noticable when parked along a wall, ie drive thru. Sounds just like a lifter, very mechanical, not diesel clanck, and it is spurattic, tick tick tick no-tick, tick tick tick
I have no clue.

Mine ticks too. Very rythmic though, not sporadic. Parked next to my brother's CRD once and the two of them sounds like they were playing ping-pong

I tried to explain it to my dealer once. Assuming I'm an idiot they said, "That's normal. Diesels are loud." :roll: I didn't even bother continuing the conversation. It's under warranty...let it blow up if it wants to.

Maybe it's the viscous heater? I notice something cycling on and off resulting in a clicking and I'm SURE the A/C is off (selector was on bi-level, not floor). It's a pretty slow noise but that's my guess anyway.

it's definitly not the heater it didn't do it when i first got it i noticed the noise first time at about 5500km thought it was low on oil it wasn't i now have 11234km on it and the intermittant ticking, which i thought i got rid of when i traded in my 03 ram with the hemi

mine does it too, sounds like it comes from the bottom of the engine, I was going to point it out ot the dealer but of course it was quiet the whole time I was there. :roll:

The fact that it goes away after 5 minutes or so makes me wonder if it's an oil pressure issue. Do we have a low oil pressure light on our dash??

I would not monkey around with this, get to a dealer and let them find the problem before it gets serious.

That said are you sure it's not the engine complaining about the low quality fuel (anything below about 46 cetane) causing the engine to be excessive in the rattle of ignition when first started? That is one place that 42 cetane fuel (current std in US fuel) will cause a lot of rattle, also will greatly reduse mpg's. I think that is what's causing a lot of the problems people are having with there CRD. I would almost be willing to bet that the majority of the poor mpg's and torque converter lock up problems are due to poor quality, low cetane fuel.

There are some fuel retailers that have 46 cetane fuel, one is an east coast outfit that has it's own refineries and I can't remember the name. Also I seem to remember Marathon Oil as having 46 cetane fuel. MFA Oil in the midwest has 49 cetane fuel running B2, B5, and B10 currently, BP does have a 50 cetane fuel in the NE of the country, but had to recall it from some customers as to something wrong with the fuel. That said probably most did not get recalled. This info from a fuel & oil testing lab tech/owner.

Low cetane fuel would also effect how the power band works, that would also mean a problem with torque converter lock up do to fuel so far out of spec from what the computer is programed to work. Another thing to remember is just adding 20% biodiesel to 40>42 cetane fuel will not raise the cetane probably more then 1 or 2 points. About the most you can boost the cetane is six points unless the base stock was so low in cetane that that the distribitor has already treated after leaving the refinery. In other words if the supplier is buying 38 cetane fuel and treating it to raise it 4 points then all you would be able to raise it to by you using an additive is maybe 44 cetane. However if you mix it with 50/50 with B100 you could raise a 42 cetane fuel to about 45 to 46 cetane.

Yep, we have a low oil pressure light, center bottom of the dash display. Red, looks like Aladdin's genie lamp with a drop of oil coming out of it.

Noticed a similar sound on mine, when first started up cold, but has went away by the time I reach the stop sign for the main road 1 1/2 miles from our house.

One possibility, if it seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine, could be the two counter balance shafts. They're mounted on the bottom of the crankcase.

I can see where fuel would have something to do with it. On the road trip back in December, coming home I ran for 900 miles on Diamond Shamrock and the beast just purred along. In Nashville I had to fill up on Shell. When I pulled out on the interstate, it made such a clatter it nearly scared the you know what out of me. I wondered what the deuce was making it sound like that, then I thought "Oh, east coast winter blend".

Next time I make the trip, just might put 2 or 3 jugs of B20 in the back, enough to get me to the Texas state line and decent fuel.

So Marathon has good diesel fuel with a high cetane rating?? We do have Marathon stations here.

Don't laugh Mitch, but I have taken a spare 5 gal jug with my local B10 on a trip before.

Been thinking about buying the hitch carrier I saw a wal-Mart for $50 and use it to carry fuel when I take the CRD to MI for a VW TDI GTG MD weekend.

Mine does the same thing, however while slowly pulling into the garage it stops when I hit the brakes. Could it be part of the vacuum system, maybe the PWM solenoid maintaning the vacuum reservior ?

mine is definitly not low quality oil or fuel my oil is mobile one synthetic and our diesel fuel in canada is cleaner than the U.S. fuel in regular grade but I only use sunoco gold diesel I notice when i go to relatives in michigan and have to use american diesel fuel my CRD runs smokey but no smoke on canadian diesel we have very strict fuel refinement laws that limit the amount of sulfur that our diesels are allowed to emit
