Sat down with gramps yesterday and explained to him the GDE tunes that are available for his Jeep. He had a CEL several months ago and took the Jeep to the dealer. They "repaired" the problem and his MPGs dropped from the mid thirties to the lower twenties. I explained to him the EGR issues and showed him what would have to be done. He said "Well just do it then"

Easier than I thought. The Eco tune is what we will be going with. His Libby has about 100k on it and is completely stock. He runs diesel from Murphy USA gas stations.

When I get the ECM and install it, is there anything else that I should do while I'm in there? I'm planning to clean the MAP sensor since I read about how bad it can get. Should I change any fuel filters or make any other adjustments? I don't want the power change to "shock" the poor old stock Liberty into mechanical issues.

With this tune should we be running Diesel Treat or any other additives?

Ok, anyway,

Gramps called and wants to get the Eco tune after I showed him some printed out literature from GDE's site.

GDE says I need to know if software was updated in the ECM or TCM. I know it's been to dealer recently and "reflashed" but I don't know what for or what was done. Is there a way to find this out?

Ask them. Some put a sticker on the ECM if they have upgraded something in software.

Keith has been very helpful. Sent Gramp's PCM off yesterday for the Eco tune.

One word. Awesome. Very good purchase for Grampa's old Jeep. This thing is a real screamer. I haven't' spent a lot of time behind the wheel of this Jeep but I can tell a huge improvement over stock. Gramps is giving me a report on what he thinks sometime today. Wish I could talk him into a 3" lift and some Goodyear Wrangler Authoritys....

Gramps has been on vacation but he finally got around to reporting his MPG findings to me. Supposedly got 38 mpgs mixed driving around town and out to his farm. He's pretty happy with the tune. Highly recommended!

Wow... um.... typo? The highest I've ever heard someone get is 37, and that was all highway at 56mph on a really tuned rig (CRDJoe, I think). With the GDE Eco Tune, I've seen 28 in mixed driving. Is that what you mean?

I wonder if he's driving on light weight street rubber? I think when I take the BFG AT's off I may well see a mileage increase.

There are still guys driving around without a tuned PCM. . . they will just never know what they're missing.

THat does seem high. My EVIC reports 32-33 since the tune on highway trips. I have all-treeain tires and I drive about 65-75 MPH. still I am pleased with the preformance and all. Kieth was great to work with.

EVIC mileage is optimistic at best and wildly so after the tune although GDE's current tune is supposed to have reduced the error. I'll bet the 38 was EVIC not hand calculated. I do not have the most recent tune and actual 33 mpg = 38 EVIC mpg. Not that I am complaining since 33 is a 20% improvement over stock.

Very true, you are probably right. Kadetklapp, you should probably have your grandfather divide miles driven by gallons put in, as the EVIC is often wildly inaccurate. I've seen as high as 48mph on the EVIC, which was 33 in actuality!

I hit reset on my EVIC when dislaying the MPG once on the highway while heading down a longer hill, mine started reading 99.9 MPG and then got more realistic as I leveled off and climbed the next hill.

The newest code in the tunes is supposed to correct the EVIC's MPG accuracy as much as possable.

I have the newest code and it helps, but it is still off by a good amount... especially the more highway and/or mountain driving you do.

Hey, small detail: if Gramps Jeep is at 100,000 miles, don't forget to do a timing belt ASAP. Include water pump, thermostat, and fan clutch.

If that old timing belt breaks, he'll have a 4,300 lb. paperweight.

Haven't been on here in a while but I noticed some replies in this old thread I wanted to address.

Correct, the EVIC is wildly inaccurate, or gramp's math was. He's now reporting only about 20 mpg consistantly. This was late-fall and so far this winter. Obviously winter fuel is garbage most of the time, plus he lets it run quite a bit when he's running errands. However the mileage is on par with what he was getting before the tune. I need to put my ScanGage II on it, but not sure if it will work with the CRD.

As far as the timing belt, he said he would get it done but it hasn't happened yet. His health problems are catching up to him as well as his age (83 :banghead: ) and I'm afraid he just thinks he can get by.

Also, there is a problem with finding a reputable mechanic to perform the procedure. The local Chrysler dealership is a joke. Their service department would be better served by monkeys. When they aren't cooking meth in the backlot they are forgetting to put oil in someones 300C.

I called a local reputable heavy diesel company (Scheid Diesel- Lafayette, IN) and they wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. Not sure what to do at this point. I am not a good enough mechanic to do this myself!

Try these guys.....

Clarke Detroit Diesel
4602 County Road 100 Northeast
West Lafayette, IN 47906-8652

(765) 471-7851 ‎

VM Motori was acquired by Detroit diesel in 1995, they are now owned by another company but they still may be able to work on it or know someone who will.

or this one:

Tippecanoe Truck Service
3312 Imperial Parkway
Lafayette, in 47909-5134

(765) 471-8828

Ask them for the name of a qualified diesel mechaninc that willtake on this simple task. They may need to rent the tools from keith.

"If there's a will, then there's a way."

Called Tippy Truck Service (I hadn't thought of them) and while they primarily deal with fleet, they said they could try and squeeze the Jeep in when the had time. He quoted me around $600-800 in labor. I didn't think that was TOO bad but by the time I figure in parts I'm looking around $1000.

The problem is they had never even heard of a Liberty diesel. I'm not sure I want grampa's Jeep to be the guinea pig...
