Hey Guys.
My TJ caught fire in a McDonalds parking lot not to long ago so i ended up getting a KJ. Got the Kj because i wanted somthing more comfortable for my daily commute then a dedicated trail rig. So far ive installed a set of spidertrax spacers, a teraflex 2" lift, 3 window regulators, and a a/c pump. Here she is. Image

I'm surprised your list of mods didn't include a fire extinguisher. Welcome to LOST.

Haha ya thats a good idea. I did have an extinguisher in the tj but someone called 911 before knew it was burning they had already tried prying the door open on my velcro soft top jeep. they couldent get the driver door to pop so they tried the pass. door and destroyed that one too. So after destroying 2 hard doors and both sides of my tub they realized you could reach around from the velcro rear window and unlock it. :banghead: .. The Dash was gone but i got it running after a bit of wire rigging and drove it around for a few more weeks with nothing except 3 pedals, a steering wheel, and 2 old seats from a donor jeep.

I am new to the forum as well and have a question for you. I have an 06 CRD limited with 68K on it. I took it out in the San Rafael Swell, got addicted and decided to trade it in for a Rubicon or something similar. My Toyota buddies had more clearance.

I have adequate funds to keep the Liberty going or buy a new rig but can't justify both unless the trail rig were cheap (okay, my wife can't justify it-I can). I love the Diesel, I get 25 around town and 32 on the Highway, love how the Liberty drives but wonder if it is worth it to fix up the Liberty enough to have a fighting chance at an average Moab like trail.

I would love to fix up the Liberty if it is worth it in the end. My toyota friend thinks I nuts as does the local 4x4 performance parts place. They think I should get a "real rig". Since you have now owned both how do you feel about the Liberty? Does anyone have any thoughts about fixing up their Liberty? Has it been worth it and do you have a rig that can take you in the back country or should I take the advice of the 4x4 guy and trade if for a Rubicon? I should say that I don't want to do extreme riding, just enough lift to get out and have fun in the woods.

Lift it put a big set of tires and a lockers in it and you will be pulling the toyota's out before you know it and still be getting better gas milage then they could ever imagine. Just make sure not to skimp on your skids. But all this depends on what kind of trails you plan on doing i mean don't expect this thing to be like a rock buggy. I have had mine in trails with XJs on 33 and it held its own just fine even in places where they had issues. Just gotta remember this thing is a diesel meaning torque is in massive supply so this thing will crawl over just about anything in low range. Making walking through a rock garden easy but mud is a different story. So go with your intended purpose if you want a dedicated trail rig yes a Rubi would be better and easier to heavily modify. If you want a daily drive that you can wheel on the weekend in easy, moderate ,and even some difficult trails while getting good mileage stick with the KJ.

This is all fine and dandy but remember that the KJ is still a grocery getter at heart. You are limited to 31-32" tires, limited selection of parts and a front end that loves to self destruct. Other than that the KJ is awesome. I'm not really bad mouthing it as much as it seems I've been wheeling one for 2 years and replaced every part on it. These are just the facts that you need to take into account before any big plans go into effect.

You express my concerns exactly. I worry that I can spend 10 or 15K and end up with a grocery runner with nice tires. I can put new axles, lockers, tires, etc but is the base build of the KJ built tough enough to handle the stress of the modifications. If it is in then it's the only way to go because it's the only Diesel available right now. I get great mileage, fun drivability, the ability to fart black smoke in the window of the FJ at the stop light and still be able to have fun off road. I live in the desert so sand is more important than mud, I want to go anywhere that a stock Rubicon could go, be able to drive the freeway to get there, then have some fun and come home. I'd like to explore the Mojave, check out Death Valley, drive the Devil's race track in the San Rafael Swell and feel that my rig can handle it. I looked at the build on the amazing orange and black KJ that makes his way around the forums. It looks like he started out with a lift on his stock front end and then ended up replacing all the axles. I'd like to learn from all your lessons and do it the way you all would have done it had you had the opportunity to do it again.

Thanks for your responses and advice.

Looks pretty dang good to have just added spacers and a teraflex lift.
