I went a short business trip to NYC this week, the libby sat at the shop for 3 days, when i started it up for the first time in three days the low coolant level light came on and then went back off after about 20 seconds of the engine running. so i thought nothing of it. i went home mowed my lawn, the libby sat for about 3 hours, before i started it again to move a trailer out of the grass and the low coolant light came on again and then went back off after maybe 15 seconds of running. so i took it round the town real quick let it warm up a lil, i checked the level and its down on the cold level when its partially warmed up. then i checked to see if any coolant in the oil and found nothing. anything else i should specifically look for if the level gets low again after i refill it?

The EGR cooler on the driver's side of the engine is a popular place for coolant leaks. If you don't see any externally, let it get all the way cold overnight and look for white smoke out the tailpipe when you first start it in the morning.

i thought i would have coolant in the oil still if it was egr cooler, or do you mean its the metal lines going to the egr cooler that are leaking?

There are hoses and fittings on the EGR valve and cooler that some people have had leaks at - going out onto the ground.

x2 to that! although if was a broken head i could put new stronger studs in and clean out the intake manifold while its all apart which would be pretty cool. but also a big pain and costly.

mine is doing the same thing at the moment. I've got a jug of coolant with me to keep it topped up. the leak is coming from the rubber coolant lines that feed the EGR cooler. I've gotta pick up the lines tomorrow from the dealer and get started on replacing them.

it was about $100 for the two lines from the dealer.

I've been following the other members thread about removing the egr cooler and all related egr crap and getting a SEGR to avoid the light on the dash. just seems like a much better solution although a bit of work to remove it all.

Mine just started doing this at 92,000 miles and I can't find the leak.

It is difficult to check under the intake for leaks.

Mine only leaks at full system pressure, once it starts to cool off the pressure drops and the leaking stops. most likely you will have to pressure test your cooling system.

I just developed a coolant leak at about 62,500 miles. It only happens when the vehicle is warmed up and once parked a puddle forms on the pavement generally under the EGR. No leaks when it is cool.

I have it in the shop now, but it could be the EGR cooler hoses/tubes. I'll post back when I find out the specific source of the leak.

The lower EGR cooler tube went bad. Simple fix, but a little difficult to get to.

On VERY cold mornings last winter, mine would do this. During the summer, it subsided unless it sat for a long time. After 114,000 miles, if it sat for too long, light would come on until warm up and then go off. Level was low but no leaks of any discernable quantity. Did 100k mile routine. Now at 120,000 miles, no light.

There was a hairline leak where the pump mounted to the engine. Other than that, no real leak to speak of.
:2cents:

just got around to replacing the coolant hoses to the egr cooler.

What a be-yotch of a job, not overly difficult but time consuming. Anyway if you remove the fuel filter it gives you lots more room for your hands, and you can actually see what the hell your doing.

I did the entire job from above as doing it from below, you would be working blind.

ditched the factory tension clamps in favor of stainless hose clamps.

hardest part was getting pliers on the factory hose clamps to get them off, and removing the existing hoses... due to the heat they just wanted to stay put. used a razor knife to slice them and get them free.

If you aren't really using the EGR, i.e. GDE tune, is there any reason to replace the egr coolant line. Can it just be remove and capped?

I have been having a coolant loss problem for a while now. I could not find it and so I took it to a shop and they pressure tested it and found and finally found a really small leak. Over the past week I notice an increasing amount of white smoke out the tail pipe, I replace #2 glow plug 2 weeks ago and it is out again and the engine would try to turn over but would not but finally did start about an hour later so I think it was hydro locked. It is going to the shop to get to the bottom of it but seems like a head gasket to me.

Just got word from the shop the jeep is at and the head gasket was bad. Three cylinders were getting water in them but the head is good no cracks or anything.

Did you take it to a Jeep dealer or a private place for the work?

Always wondering who to trust with working on the CRD.

Took it to an independent shop. The jeep dealer around here sucks and I do not trust them, like so many others here. When the f37 was done the were short 4 or 5 quarts of tranny fluid so I never took it back to them. This guy did the timing belt and change some glow plugs for me and is pretty reasonable price wise.
