POST EDITED 02/21/11, as to not confuse people even further.
Hey, sooooo, I noticed the other day while changing my diff fluids that my passenger side CV boot was ripped. (Picture is from front of Jeep)

Image

After I wiped the tears away, I went for a drive to see if I it was making a noise.
Lo' and behold, I have a clicking popping noise. I will admit, I'm not sure how long it has been ripped, but definitely near two weeks, minimum.

This is the passenger side CV and intermediate shaft
Image

Numbers one(1) through four(4) are the entire one piece CV Joint. 4 is the inner CV, 2 is the outer CV.
5 is the intermediate shaft which connects the CV to the front differential.

I recommend buying both the CV joint and the half shaft.

Some Note Worthy Quotes--

Get the remanufactured one! They use the old OEM cores, and have a better chance of being the right size. A lot of the new ones that you can buy are not the right length. I saw this myself when I helped a friend change his. We put the old one and the new one next to each other, and the new one was definitely shorter. :?
Get remanufactured. Otherwise you might be replacing them again sooner than you'd like to.

The new Intermediate shaft from Eric at Automotive Parts Unlimited, 800-270-5224 in NJ was about $90. It came with both clips, one for each side.

Do you have the (35mm) socket for the hub nut, you'll need that as well,
then everything else is pretty much pull it out and replace.
Use anti seize or some grease on the threads between the Intermediate shaft and the CVs

The intermediate shaft(#5) is what connects the CV to the front diff.
Its a good idea to buy a new one.
I learned that the hard way.... lol

Theres no use in breaking down 1 through 4, thats just the passenger side cv joint. 5 is the intermediate shaft and yes, its a good idea to replace it also. Try Eric for a new one. Napa has the reman shafts for cheap.

Just a note, I could not get the old cv and intermediate shaft apart what so ever. I just returned the entire thing to napa for a core, they didnt care. Whole sha bang slides out of the front diff with a little prying.

Thanks Budke and JeepJeepster,
I've been looking online some more and I found some more info..And cleared something up for me as well..

It looks like I will buy the whole CV from NAPA..

So next question, What exactly to I need?

I am going to buy the CV from NAPA -
CV Driveshaft - Right Front - Remfd
NAPA Part Number: NMD 958355
Price: 60.09
Core Unit: 123.00

The new Intermediate shaft from Eric at Automotive Parts Unlimited, 800-270-5224 in NJ was about $90. It came with both clips, one for each side.
ericautoparts@aol.com

Are these the only two Item I need? looks like it is :)

Thanks again!

I didn't order it yet. (the CV from Napa)
They have both.
I was thinking new because the $30 isn't a bank breaker..
I can only order it online, and not straight from my local NAPA.
So the Remanned one I would to have to ship it back to them.

I'm good either way. Any thoughts as to which one I should get?

OOO
You'd think they'd make them the same. woah.

Anyway Thanks, saved my butt!, that definitely cleared that up.

-----

Now as to the "clip" I'm trying to figure out which one I need..
This is from tommudd's post about it.

tommudd wrote:
There is a clip on each end of the intermediate shaft
Check it close 9 times out of ten it will need replacing.
What happens is they rust , then start wearing and by the time you hear any noise its all over. Mine looked OK when I first pulled it out until I cleaned it up. Thankfully I bought one 3 years ago , stock piled it and was ready!

blurry but......

Yeah, I ordered a new intermediate shaft from Eric, and he wasn't sure if it came with a new "clip" or not.
I called the Jeep Parts Department and he wasn't sure which one I was looking for..
He faxed this to me and asked which I wanted..
Image

I guess they do come with it, but I can't imagine them being that expensive.. I guess I'd rather have everything I need, especially since it is my daily driver. .
8)

Maybe I don't need them?

well.. outboard #1 snapring is mated next to an o-ring

so i'm thinking #4 for the diff side and 1 and 2 for the cv side

but uh.. make coyote tell ya.. like i said i'm way off my game today :(

there's not a lot that i'm certain of today for some reason

pic of that shaft looks like there should be an o ring before the heel of the shaft

Erics should come with them, all new ones do or should
but if you don't want to take a chance just call the dealer and tell him you need the clips for the intermediate shaft,
Oh and sorry for the blurry picture, never thought they would be used for demonstration purposes!
And what everyone else has said, its an easy job to do so don't worry
Remanned from NAPA for sure!!

Thanks everyone!!! 8)

A big help as per usual..
I should receive the intermediate shaft before the CV, then order the Parts from the dealer.

When I figure everything out I will summarize in my first post the correct info. I wouldn't want to confuse anybody more than I already did! :)

Don't forget to rub some gear lube on the intermediate shaft when you put it on and check the diff fluid level as well. You may lose some in the swap.

The shaft I got from eric came with both clips. All I got was the shaft from eric and the reman'd CV from napa and installed it. I covered the splines on the intermediate shaft with grease. I had to replace mine due to worn out splines which caused vibrations. Anytime I have the suspension apart Ill probably try to get that intermediate shaft out to grease it.

Really and truly its a 1-2 hour job if you take your time and enjoy working on the Jeep.

The remaned ones are remaned here in the states from OEM cores which were made here in the states/canada/mexico.Those "new" CV's are made in China and they can't read schematics very well so they are almost always the wrong length.

So far.. I have the intermediate shaft from Eric, it came with the clips on both ends.
I have a remanned passenger side CV from Napa.

I have one question before I attempt the install..

Do I need any special tools to break down the old setup or any special tools to install the new stuff?

Or do I just pull it apart, then put it back together?

Thanks 8)
