CRAP!!!! Both rear windows failed with 2 weeks of each other.

Is this a reasonable DIY job?

If so, where to get the best parts. Hopefully parts that will last a bit longer. Both front windows failed muliple time but were replaced under warrenty. Now it's on my nickel.

Thanks for any advice.

It's not a bad DIY job... Figure 30-45 minutes for your first one.

3rd ^^^

just did mine a week or so ago, rear driver side. not a horrible job just be patient. yes, about 35-45 min or so...

TIP: i took the entire motor out of the door so i could work on my workbench, doing so allowed me to get by withOUT taking the spiral cable out of the nylon tube or taking the motor apart. You'll understand when you read the directions.

X2 I did the drivers rear and have the one for the passenger rear when it breaks. Gorilla tap will hold up the window until you get it in and can replace it.

DON'T DO ANYTHING!!!
Those regulators are being replace under "warranty" by Chrysler. I just went through this. I had a friend in the body shop business have a guy remove the regulator and I was going to get it from the Parts Department. The Parts guy told me about the "recall" and, indeed, the Service Writer confirmed that Chrysler is repairing these at no charge. The catch is that the whole thing has to be intact when they get it.

As a result, I had the body shop guy replace everything and went to the dealer. No hassle, no questions. They fixed it by the next morning.

In fact, Chrysler even had someone contact me to be sure that I had not paid anything for the repair.

Hope you qualify for this, as I did.

By the way, my CRD is out of warranty.

The window regulators are worse than the original tires. I've had all fail at least once. I replaced the driver's rear with the Steiger mod last time it failed. Then, the passenger side rear failed (again) when I was on a hunting trip from AZ to NM at the end of August. The dealer in Santa Fe offered to replace the glass and regulator with some "new and improved" replacement for $275. F*** Chrysler. We should have let them fail.

Did I remember to say, "F*** Chrysler", I mean Fiat?

I've heard of people having these fail multiple times, on the same window. My neighbor had three of his go out all at once. This is the first time I've heard that regulators are being replaced under some kind of "recall" - regulator failure is a regular problem with any KJ (and many other Chrysler products) but I've never heard that they will replace them out of warranty.

Besides, you have two options. Replace it with the same junk plastic part that will likely break again and repeat, or replace it with a sturdy metal piece that will last forever. I'd go with the latter. Heck, I'm so adamant about not having to deal with repeated regulator failures that I went on ahead and replaced all four of my window regulators on the slim chance that Steiger goes out of business before I needed another one (and that would be just my luck, too)

It may be the first you have heard of it but both the Service Writer and the Chrysler contact thought otherwise.
The Company sent me a letter because they could not reach me by phone. I am the second owner, the vehicle is out of warranty... there must be something to it. Free is still free.

If you go with the Steiger fix it and forget it replacement part I'd add one more comment on the instructions. When you get to the step about removal of the fuzz from the cable the instructions say "A wire wheel mounted on a bench grinder works great for this, but it can also be picked out with a pair of tweezers if necessary." Forget the tweezers and forget using a Dremel wire wheel (the former takes forever and the latter is also slow) use the wire wheel on the bench grinder or a wire wheel on a power drill. The bigger wire wheel route only takes a few seconds to remove all the fuzz. Wish we had tried that first instead of the Dremel wire wheel.

No, free is not still free. There is such a thing as opportunity cost. It's worth more to many of us to spend a little on a PERMANENT fix than to arrange to leave our (in many cases) daily driver at a dealer, if there are any left around us, and let them replace the same garbage plastic piece that broke with another identical piece of garbage, all the while risking them messing something else up, door panel, interior, engine, etc. Then, it might break again later...but they'll fix it again, right? No thanks.

Just because you don't pay any money doesn't mean it's free. The risk of damage to my vehicle alone is enough to keep it out of Chrysler's garage bays. I'd gladly pay for them NOT to work on it.

Not trying to go off on a rant...I'm just saying: The factory part is really, really badly engineered.

Dan

I just searched a list of recall's and do not find one on window regulator. I also called two dealers in AZ and was told no by both.

Snowy can you please post the info on this recall?

Well, the possiblity of a recall is interesting but I'm the orginal owner and have not received any info. I have orderer the repair kits and will install them shortly. I guess if there truely is a recall, I will have to deal with it at the time.

Usually there is some provision for compensation if a owner has already undertaken a repair on their nickel.

litton you are correct on all accounts. I have replaced regulators 5 times and have not found a recall. This is why I would like some info on this recall.

Here is what I know... and what I experienced firsthand.

As I indicated by enclosing the word in quotes, "warranty" is my way of referring to what Chrysler is doing. The Parts Department at my local dealership in Los Angeles (David Ellis Chrysler/Jeep) told me about a program that he was aware of, to replace the regulators on certain Model Year Liberty's. He asked me about mine ('06 CRD Limited) and strongly suggested that I ask the Service folks about it. They were all too familiar with the "program" and said that I had to bring the vehicle into the dealership with the window fully intact. They had to do all of the work. The guy went on to say that (to paraphrase him) "the new regulator is different from the original, etc.,..."

I went in one afternoon, they wrote me up, the car was completed, free of charge, mid-morning the next day. Shortly thereafter, I received a letter in the mail, on Chrysler letterhead (I thought it was a sales piece) saying that they had tried to contact me by phone and this letter was in addition to that attempt to contact me. I called back. During that conversation I was asked if I had paid anything at all for the work the dealership performed. I said "no" and the lady thanked me for my time, indicating that there would soon be a follow-up letter about the matter.

That is all of it.

I mentioned in my first post and it is significant to remember, that I am not the first owner, this vehicle is not under any kind of warranty, yet Chrysler performed this free of charge. When does that ever happen?

Any of you are free to do what you want with your money and your time. This is also my "daily driver." I would much rather take the time to drop off the car, even spend a nominal amount on a rental, if necessary, and get the work done free of charge, than to spend $275 on a regulator and/or spend however much time and money on an attempted fix, and then assume everything will be all right, perchance voiding any hope of reimbursement down the line... but that's just me.

Hope it helps.

I spoke with both the service maneger and parts manager this morning and neithr of them have any knowledge of such a recall.

Does your letter referance any document, TSB, etc. It would be nice to have some ammo when we talk with these dickheads.

The only info on the letter from Chrysler to me was the Customer Representative's name, Tarah. Her phone number is 877-656-4311 X-4718314. Otherwise, it is written on rather generic Chrysler letterhead, with a return address in Auburn Hills, MI. Obviously I have an individual case number.

To reiterate, she was quite courteous and was very interested to know whether or not I had spent any kind of money on the process, even going so far as to suggest that I could put in for reimbursement on the rental car I had. (I'm not very optimistic on that front.)

Have at it.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post but would like to add to this topic... I have had my Liberty (2006 Sport) in a few times for the regulators. The 1st visit I paid full price for a new window and the extended warranty covered the regulator. The next visit for regulators I was advised that Chrysler was now replacing them under warranty they also told me they had redesigned the parts for a second time. Anyway to keep this short I received a call from Chrysler a few weeks ago in regards to my 1st visit and they were letting me know I would be receiving a refund check (which I have received and cashed). They also said I would be receiving a letter about warranty information sometime in December. She could not tell me what it was in reference to other than new warranty information for the CRD's.
