 Post subject: CRD (Again) - No Start

Ok this is getting annoying, got in my CRD this morning, cranked it, it started ran for 15 seconds and shut off, will crank but not fire. This is the first night it has gotten below 30. Ran fine yesterday on a 200 mile highway/road circuit.

Any thoughts, I havent gone to get a code scanner yet but will later if I cant figure it out. I am thinking fuel, and havent replaced the filter in about 27K sot aht is step one.

Only problems to date have been

Injector 4 failure - replaced
Gloplug 3 faulure replaced
Battery - New 6 months old.

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.

BTW no fuel in water light or anything anomylous, just wont fire.

Classic air in the fuel filter head symptom. Bleed air out of system and it should run fine. To bleed pump the primer 5-10 times until it gets firm then loosen the bleeder and repeat the process until air free. If you haven't already done so order the new style fuel head and wiring pigtail from Mopar Parts America. Costs about $90 but comes with a new filter. That cured my problem although others have also installed a low psi lift pump and I may too someday.

Ya I am going to change the filter (have one just hadnt gotten around to installing it) so I will bleed it then........hopefully I can get it to reignite.

Hint: LIFT PUMP
If the fuel head leaks after the lift pump is installed, you found the leak.
When the fuel sucks out of the tank, so does the performance.
I went through this crap before I installed my lift pump.
I don't miss the poor staring and stumbling at higher RPMs crap one bit.

Yes I may go that way, but right now I got to get it to start again period. Its definately leaking a little around the fuel head somewhere on one of the fittings. I though i had the new fuel head installed but.........

This jeep has been running fine since I got the injector installed and got all the fuel leaks on the manifold fixed.

I am going to go take it all off now and install the new filter, bleed and see if that gets it up and running.

Well I think I am getting it worked out, took the fuel head down changed the filter (greyish brown paper) assembly, odd thing was there was diesel in the fuel heater plug, I dont know whether the fuel head just backed up or this is where it was leaking. There was also some evidence of leaking around the fuel head wires.

Started up and then stalled, bled it again got some more air out of it priming, started again and it seemd to run fine for 15 minutes until I shut it off. Going to testdrive here.

I am thinking I need to get a fuel head on order.

Regardless whether you do or do not do the lift pump if you any diesel "in" the fuel heater plug you almost certainly have the 1st gen fuel filter head with the under sized heater plug that's prone to burning up/shorting out especially if the heater element comes on in an air pocket. When that happens the sealant for the elements melts/cracks and fuel starts to leak and more air gets into the system not to mention that while it's hard to start a diesel fire it can be done. If you have a leaky 1st gen head best replace it as close to right now as possible.

My warranty replaced stock fuel filter head has lasted over 40K since I installed the lift pump around 20K. I even made an adapter plate so I can screw on a Racor, still going.
If you get an air bubble where the heater is, it will over heat the plastic heater puck and destroy it. Unless you live in the far North, unplug the relay in the power dist box, you don't need the heater.

if you're thinking about going after market and using a Racor setup..
I think its a good choice. add the lift pump and the extra plumbing to make bleeding easy and mess free..
it doesn't take much..just a couple of feet of tubing, a 'T', and a valve.

I did this on my wife's jeeps..so much easier to bleed the air out..turn the key open a valve..

why this isn't/wasn't done from the start?? BTFM...
an in tank lift pump from dodge, a valve and a 'T'...darn bean counters..they killled a great Jeep..
