I've been having some recurring problems with 05 CRD the last few weeks.

First and most important, I've been having problems with starting the jeep. Some mornings, I turn the key and it takes a few tries before the engine finally starts. A few times its failed to start at all. I turn the key and all I get is a click. This has usually happened after a day or two of not driving. I have a battery tester and it says the battery is fine. Could it be starter or something worse/more expensive? I checked the fuel line for air and it was good. Still didn't start after being primed.

Second, ever since the summer my A/C sometimes decides to stop working. Being in Florida, I usually run the air on Max A/C mode. One night in August, I noticed that the air stopped flowing completely. I had it on Max and I switched between all four blower settings but I was getting nothing. It worked fine a few hours later. These days either two things happen when on Max A/C: the airflow is extremely weak on all 4 blower settings or no airflow at all and a loud wind noise coming from inside the dash. Maybe a leak somewhere? Nothing like this happens when I use regular A/C mode.

Third, the gas pistons for the hood and rear window are going bad. Where can I get replacements?

My A\C did basicly the same thing. I had to replace the compressor cycling switch, located on the accumulator. The A\C was not cycling and the evaporator was freezing up.

The no start sounds like a battery - you need it tested under load - and the key is the voltage has to be high enough to turn on the computer while it's cranking - just current isn't enough - the starter can turn but the computer doesn't turn on.

(starters and solenoids are next on the list to check - but battery first)


on AC - is it not cold? - or is it just the fan's not blowing? - 2 totally different issues - fan's are commonly the resistor block - they die - it's behind the glove box and a fairly quick change

although a couple of folks have had problems with the blend doors getting stuck - don't know if there's a good solution to that.

not cold - needs someone to leak check an AC system.

As far as the pistons go, part of the problem can come from slamming the hood or back window. My back window stopped coming up on its own a couple months after I bought the Jeep, but somebody recommended that I try shutting the window gently for a bit. Within a few weeks it worked like new again.

The key there is to push the hood or window down gently until just before the latch, then give it a shove. Otherwise, so I've been told, you can shorten the life of the hydraulics.

The battery tester does have a load switch. This is the one I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F5HU6C/ref=oss_product. Should I go buy a battery before I take it to the mechanic? Any battery recommendations?

On Max A/C its always cold, it just doesnt blow sometimes. The only time its hot is on regular A/C is after I leave my car baking in the summer sun while I'm at work. How much would this resistor block cost?



I never slam my hood but I'll try this for a while.

Can you measure the battery voltage while cranking? If it dips below 9-9.5v the battery is very weak. Cranks will feel sluggish if the system voltage is below 10v. Even with a 'key on' you can monitor battery voltage as the load from the glow plugs change.

The original optima puts out good CCA, but the higher the better in most cases. The amp-hour rating is also important. Hope you get it fixed.

Being yours is an 05 your battery is at least 5 years old If I were you I would go some place where they have a battery you would buy if yours tests bad and have them load test yours in their parking lot

It doesn't have the original battery. I bought the jeep in Jan 2008, and it was already on its second red top. Doesn't inspire much confidence in Optima batteries.

But, good news! My dad got it started this morning, so its definitely the battery and not something more expensive.

I would take a look at your fuel filter housing, and replace it for the no start hard start problems. I had the same problems, would start ok sometimes, then longer to start other times and then no start. I had a crack in the filter housing causing me to lose prime. I was able to fix the problem temp buy pumping the fuel prime on top of the filter. pump it 3 or 4 times and watch for leaks around the connectors. If you CDR fails to start again..try pumping the prime ball..if it fires up right away the housing is your problem..hope this helps, parts run about $120 and its a pretty easy DYI..jn

Don't forget the tensioner on the serpentine belt. Are you not hearining anything. A/C and alternator BOTH can be affect by a tensioner that has gone wrong.
