Several months ago, I replaced the fluid and installed new filters in my transmission. I purchased the filters from Rockauto.com and they were both made in USA. Last month my transmission started acting up with engine stalling when shifting in reverse, erratic shifting, and occasional slippage when cold. Adding lube guard to the tranny seemed to help but I still had issues with engine dying when shifting into reverse. Thinking that my canister filter had a bum check valve, I decided to replace it with an OEM one.

Today I drained and dropped the tranny fluid pan. The flat pan filter was split several inches along the crimped seam that joins both halfs of the filter assembly. The tranny was having a hard time drawing fluid from its pickup tube (think a hole in a soda straw). All the lubeguard did was raise the level of fluid in the pan high enough to help the pump draw fluid from the pan.

The canister filter also had an issue with it. It had installed it with a strap wrench and I knew it was on good and tight but it had rotated itself partially off and the plastic nipple was still screwed into the transmission. I could not remove the plastic nipple from the OEM filter and suspect it was integral to the filter or was someone loctited to it so it wouldn't get loose. This issue is what caused air in my lines which caused my engine to die in the morning when I started it and put it into reverse.

BotoomLineUpFfront (not up front but you get the point): USE OEM PARTS FOR TRANSMISSION FILTERS. I thought I was doing good by using USA made aftermarket filters (figured anything was better than China made crap from Autozone) and I was wrong.

The tranny now runs like new.

Now all I have to do is find a Bosch glow plug (my dealership says they are on national backorder and no one in Colorado has any in stock) to replace a bad #3 plug (all 4 were replaced 8 months ago). Anybody know who is selling glow plugs?


Unfortunately/Fortunately: No need for a new TC and shift kit. When job situation/finances improve will drop tranny for them but for now it'll remain stock.

Wix 58843 Includes both filters and a gasket

Glad to hear that. The pan filter that split was made by Alltrans (USA made), the canister filter was another brand but I forget exactly the name.

X2 on the Wix kit, very good quality with no problems.

Chrysler got a bad batch of trans filters a few years ago and had the dealers throw out the ones in stock.
Bad news is that Dumpster Divers grabbed them and try to unload them on eBay, Crag's List, Garage Sales, ect.
Also, I would not be surprised to see some of the bad filters that were rejected by Chrysler before they arrived, were reboxed and later sold under house brand names. You may have gotten stuck with one of the Junk Filters.

Adding to what warp says the situation got so bad Chrysler issued a new part number for the good filters because the bad ones were getting back into the supply chain at Chrysler :dizzy: :furious: :ALONE:

As far as "cheap Chineese" fllters go, look carefully at your NAPA/Wix fuel filter for where it's made :shock:

x4 on the Wix, got mine from O'Reilley's Auto Parts.

After finally getting the fluid levels right (7 quarts!) including a bottle of Lucas Tranny, it runs great and doesn't make me wait to engage in the morning anymore.

The wait-to-engage was even happening after shutting it off for 20 minutes sometimes. Really annoying.

if all goes well, as in the part arrive on Friday. This weekend I plan on changing the tranny fluid and filters..using WIX from RockAuto...I was concerned at first but then saw other's that used the same part that I'm planning on using.

7qts of fluid..

I really starting to rethink not filtering the used oils and burning...NOT in the jeep but in my bus...
My bus is due for a change so that 3 gallons. from the Jeep 1.75 gallons( tranny) 1.5 gallons( engine oil )
6 gallons of free fuel??I just need to filter it to 1 micron..

7 quarts? Mine took almost 9 quarts this time around. I still can't figure out how the pan filter split along the same. Its not stressed when installed and it wasn't damage when I isntalled it. It was good for a while then kaboom..split and then I got the tranny issues out of the blue.

With your bad filter letting in air it's likely the "extra" two quarts are because there was air in the TC and the rest of the transmission instead of fluid :mrgreen:

I had 2 of these mistakes, that is why I made my own check valve mod, spin on filters were leaking back, crappy check valves.

Or how can I identify a bad filter??
The reason I ask is I've bought a new dealer filter a year or so ago and plan to use it soon.
MAYBE I SHOULD GET A NEW UPDATED ONE??

so far all is good..
but it only took 5 qts instead of 7..maybe some was left in the torque converter..either way the filter got changed and lots of new oil added. Since we don't offroad or tow(not much) with the jeep this shouldn't be a problem.

I thought I was done with 5 too, then the next day I checked it again when it did the same exact slip-before-engaging-gear deal... And also seemed to be slow to engage while in traffic too.

Air bubbles working through the system maybe, just keep an eye on it for the next couple days. I also discovered that the dipstick is striking the bottom of the pan, THAT is why it keeps shoving itself out of the top. What does that mean? That you may not be able to trust the dipstick anyway, the level is incorrect.
