"12 oil changes at 10,000 mile intervals" his words? Curious if he was padding his OCI/number of changes.

(sure it looks bad, can't see the pics at work)

Yep that was his oil change intervals, had all the paperwork in his glovebox,he showed us like we were going to give him a break since he did do "regular" oil changes, also how I knew he used castrol syntec(and Fram oil filters).

WOW I used to use Castrol in my cars for years. never had an issue like THat. I had the valve cover and head of the Isuzu off too, it was clean at that time. I did change it every 3000 miles too.

Now I use shell rotella T6 and change it every 6000 by the manal's sever service schedule. not sure how good shell is many here use it in the diesel and it seems to be very popular in all for diesel owners.

not saying his problem is related but I've heard/read that the intake gaskets on those 3.1's commonly leaked internally and could contribute to/cause sludge problems.

I've done over a 100 intake jobs on 3.1/3.4/3.8's and never seen that before, seen lots of carbon in the intake runners but no sludge in the valley like that.

That looks awful i use Royal purple every 6250 miles with a mobil filter ussually. I have taken the valve covers off and old John Deer Diesel I-6 in and air compressor probably mid 70's. It hasn't had but one oil change since the company bought it in 2003 and it looked better then that. I mean it had alittle build up but nothing like that.

Looks to me like maybe he had a FRAM oil filter failure.

I've gotta ask at the risk of sounding like a moron...

Is this thread complaining about:

a) FRAM Filters
b) Castrol Syntech
c) 10,000 mile Oil Changes
or
d) the 3.1?

It is basically saying don't be and idiot and change your oil like your suppose to. And don't go cheap when you do it unless you want to kill the motor.

THIS is why my father, a 35+ year veteran mechanic, won't touch anything but Pennzoil, and changes the oil on stuff he services frequently.

I found sludge/wax like that with Penzoil too when I had my shop.
Bad thermostat can contribute to oil sludge too not just the oil base, paraffin Vs asphalt.
of course, 10,000 mile oil changes with out a centrifuge or bypass filter will also help sludge build up happen.

Just to add some fuel to the fire, I don't use it nor would I ever use it, but I found it rather interesting that new BMWs use Castrol. My friend's M5 with the high tech V10 has the Castrol only stamped on the oil cap. Their oil change intervals are in the 15,000 mile range too.
I would love to see a pic of one of those engines after a few years.

Nice. I know the new ones, the computer tells the owner when to bring the car in for service based on driving conditions.
Regardless, I use Mobil 1 every 6200 and that's about it.
