Valvoline oils

Kinda of hard to say yeh or nah to it by what i can read it is a new product for long haul trucks. With newer engine components 2007 and before to be exact. But that is for Semi's which are always lagging behind in certian areas of engine building (Emissions EGR). So i would so go for it see how it works and let us all know because until i can find something better it is either Modil 1 or Royal Purple.

So, for the cost of syn. you get an extra 5,000 miles under normal duty cycles... That's not a good return on the investment. This oil has been out for years. Nothing special.

I use a lot of Valvoline in my trucks (engine,trans and diffs). I don't use this particular one, but in general, they make good stuff. This oil should work just fine in the CRD. If it is priced right, no reason not to use it.

I was just about to do a change and put in that valvol. pictured there, any reason not to?

In my personal opinion No reason not to use Premium blue 5-40
In my professional opinion, If it does not meet the spec specified in the owners manual and your under warranty, don't use it. I dont off the top of my head know the spec but there are only 2 oils that have it, the last time I looked, they were both Mobil 1, 0-40 "European" and 5/0-40 esp

In my personal opinion any synthetic 5-40 with a CJ4 or CI4 rating is just fine. (7500-10000 miles)
I would no use a non synthetic in my crd for multiple reasons but if used with reasonable intervals I think a 15-40, if environmentally acceptable (aka not cold) should be fine 3000-5000 miles.

Check out the used oil analysis thread. The crd is not particularly mean to oil. I personally use rotella t6 and run it to 9000 miles.

That oil is CJ-4 Synthetic. It meets the standards of our engine as does quite a few others out there. "Premium Blue" is what Valvoline calls their diesel oil. This is opposed to their old CI-4+ which is non-syn 15-40. That is called "Classic Blue". I have a stash of that for my trucks in 5 gallons pals. As of about a year ago, they still offered the Classic Blue in pals and drums to fleets that didn't need the newer (and considered by many to be inferior) CJ-4. I don't expect it to be around forever, so I have about 20 gallons in the garage. The libby only specs CI-4+ so it doesn't need CJ-4. But CI-4+ 5-40 syn. does exist any more except for very expensive Amsoil Marine oil.

Tinman you seem to know your oils very well can i ask how you fell about me using Royal Purple 0w-40. I haven not done quite as much checking into my oil selection as you. But every engine i have had so far has loved royal purple so i thought why treat the libby any different.

Also i know way off subject what is Brite Box say it in your sig but can't figure out what in the world it could be please explain or point me to a link?

I haven't used Royal Purple personally, but I know it is good oil with a good reputation. I wouldn't hesitate to use it at all. In my location Rotella is easily available and is relatively cheap (because is technically isn't fully synthetic, its base stock is mineral oil - but it's still good.) I see Mobile, Delvac, and RP sometimes in different stores sporadically so I just choose what was consistently available. Plus I wanted the cheapest "synthetic" oil I could get since you don't need synthetic to run 6-10k intervals. I think it's waste of money. I presume there is something about the engine design that needs synthetic, otherwise, I'd use dino oil.

Well I couldn't find the Valvoline anywhere. So I'm sticking with Shell Rotella T6.

From what I hear, the oil passageways are very small for the engine/turbo in this rig...so a good lightweight syn. oil is important. But I refuse to pay $8/quart for the recommended 0-40 Mobil 1. So Rotella it is.

That's exactly reason I stick with syn and use Rotella.
