Just took my first long-ish trip in the CRD (500 mi.) and I am SO much less fatigued. I'm a lazy driver, and ALWAYS want to use the cruise control. However, I live in the Texas "hill country" and just about wherever I go ther are rolling hills. In my previous vehicle (Mazda Tribute V6) I couldn't use the cruise -- going up a hill required several downshifts to try to maintain the speed, ending up with me just killing the cruise.

I feel like the CRD doesn't even notice the hills. I think on the whole trip there were only a couple of downshifts and those were when the cruise was set at 55, so pretty close to the shift point anyway.

I love this thing more every time I drive it!

The engine loves to chug along in the 2K RPM range. Nary a downshift required even when climbing out of the Phoenix valley up the rim (1,200ft to about 7,000ft). The other thing I like is the automatic downshift when in cruise control going down hill.

That downhill downshift only happened once and it scared me. It was at the bottom of a hill, just as I was going flat and about to go back up. Downshifted just when it no longer needed to, then right back up again. I guess I'll get used to it.

I hate that auto downshift! Lol. I always kick out of cruise doing downhill so it wont happen. Then when out of the hill I reset the cruise.

I noticed that almost right away. My first trip with mine was camping in WV down near Charlston. The CRD did so great driving over the mountains. I was able to hold 70-75 MPH. my old subaru couldn't do that. We also have a steep hill on I83 between york and Harrisburg. most smaller cars and some trucks can't climb it with out a noticable slowdown. the CRD can do it like its not there, in fact the only small car I got passed on that hill by was a Jetta TDI.... another diesel with some torque behind it.

And that Jetta driver was probably shocked to see another vehicle flattening that hill like he was... Until / unless he saw that you were also riding a diesel. Gotta love that torque!

I have GDE's large sticker on the rear glass so he may have seen I was diesel but who knows. the only spark ignition cars that get by me on that hill if I am pushing it are high powered v8 sports cars.

The added mileage, the torque, the sound. Whats not to like? :goink:
