Hey guys great forum you got here, I bought an 05 CRD about a month ago, 74k miles, according to Jeeps website it has no outstanding recalls. This morning when I went to leave for work I put it in gear and it wouldn't move, it felt like it was slipping then it slammed into gear and started moving. i noticed several times to and from work it is shifting funny either slamming into gear or shifting sloppy. I checked the fluid and it was full and didnt smell burnt, no codes, anyone want to point me in the right direction..

Could be a couple of things

1. Replace both filters in tranny with new OEM jeep product...some aftermarket and older OEM filters had no or weak checkvalve causing fluid to drain out of tranny.

2. If that doesn't fix it, install a backflow valve...there is a member here who did it.

I had same exact problem. Mine was caused by the pan filter splitting at the seam causing tranny pump to suck mostly air.

Next time you start your engine, let engine for several minutes, put it in gear but leave parking brake on and let air out of system/pump pressure buidl up. If it drives normal, its air and most likely the aforementioned issues will fix things for you.

Also check the fluid level after driving several miles around town, stop and go, pull out the stick with the engine running. That way it won't lie to you. I had to feed my beast three times after doing my SunCoast/Transgo upgrade, should not be that bad after a filter change.

Make sure you use nothing but ATF+4.
You don,t want to find out what will happen.

Assuming you still have fluid in the transmission, let it idle for 30 seconds after you start it up so that the pump can refill the TC. Sounds like your anti-drainback valve is open. Only way to fix that is to do a tranny service with filter change (both filters) - the anti-drainback valve screws in next to the return cooler line spin on filter.

OK im going to change both filters with OEM ones, I am gathering the anti-drainback valve you are talking about is seperate fron the one built in the filter that the other forum member is talking about? Please forgive my ignorance, the last tranny I fooled with was a TH350 and that was 20 years ago!

One of the filters (the circular one) has an antidrainback valve. FLAMAN, a member here, isntalled a anti-drain back valve on one of the tranny lines so he would not have to waste 80 bucks in fluid to replace a filter whose check valve went bad early.

Not a difficult job, just messy
