Not exactly the same thing... but... I just carry an empty gas can in the back of my jeep and a 10 foot clear hose for syphoning gas. That way you can either get gas from a gas station or from a very very very nice passer by. Not as convenient, but much better than adding a neg safety factor of raw gasoline and vapors.

A friend of mine has some RotopaX fuel containers inside his hard-top JK.

He says he has no issues with vapors with these. He has an expedition trailer for taking large quantities of fuel.

Lots of people report good results transporting fuel inside with the non-CARB NATO-size cans (Wedco, Scepter), but good luck finding any in the US.

I ended up taking the expedient way out and doing the following. I ordered another set of aluminum floor slats for my Surco Safari rack. Only needed two of the five in the kit as I already had three. I bought a BajaRack double jerry can holder, which has two rows of eight holes on each side. Once I had all the parts, installation only took a few hours. Just had to mount the two slats, drill eight holes, and attach eight sets of (5/16" x 1" bolt, hex nut, 3 fender washers, 1 washer and 1 lock washer). So right now, there are two 5-gal Blitz cans on top of the rack. Hasn't been on the trail yet, but driving around town things are fine.

I used eight of the sixteen available mounting holes. Four probably would have been sufficient for strength, but eight increases the stiffness of the assembly.
