Yesterday the CEL came on. On the way to a parts store to have the DTC read, the light went out. They did a scan and found no codes. This morning the CEL was on again and I had two parts stores do scans. Both found no DTCs. The overhead monitor shows "Perform Service". Do I need to have a dealer reset the CEL? I need to drive about 250 miles today. Any worries about driving with the CEL on and no codes stored?

What is the mileage and what type of jeep is it actually? Also if the EVIC is saying perform service it is probably time for and oil change and a few other things. But the CEL going on and off sounds like and electical Germlin.

Dreaded CEL lite- never however had it on that it did'nt throw a code.
Darn CEL on CRD is always going on but it tells of a situation or problem needing fixing...
When my wife gets in the truck she always asks "Is the board clear?"
Last CEL was # 4 glow plug going bad... about a month ago.

I would say to drive it but "perform service" needs to be addressed (oil change and other interval maintainence needed)

anyway FWIW...

Well, after driving a few miles the CEL turned off and stayed off for the 250 miles home.
It's a 06 Liberty, 32K miles. I've performed all the maintenance tasks myself. One theory is that this might have been caused by driving through some high water on the road. After a spell of dry roads the engine heat drove off the moisture that was causing the CEL. The EVIC has seems to have been reset so that the next service is due in 12,500 miles.

You control the EVIC and what interval it is reset (the manual shows you how). And i would also check the map sensor they tend to get clogged if you dont have the elephant hose mod. And how high was this water and i am assuming that you drive a CRD?

It's a CRD. The sensor was cleaned less than 1K miles ago. This was not crossing a stream, just driving through a stretch where a ditch overflowed the highway a couple of inches. Unfortunately a couple of road workers got sprayed. Not nearly as bad as the spray they got from the Land Yacht following me.

Parts places only can scan active codes, you need a high end scanner to that can read history codes and fault logs.Prices of those scanners start at about $3500 before software.

The CEL has returned intermittently. My cheapo Harbor Freight scanner is apparently more compatible with the CRD than the scanners used by the two auto parts stores I went to. The HF scanner shows a 401 code from time to time. The air filter isn't clogged, and the CAC hoses, which are wrapped with silicone tape, seem to be intact. Probably will need to replace the EGR valve. Moparpartsamerica wants about $75 more than the EBAY dealers for an EGR valve.
