Turbo Cooling

Here's an interesting one, i was chatting to the service manager at the dealership regarding my ESP/BAS warning lights that were staying on.

He scanned with the Starscan, free of charge bless his soul, and the error was right rear wheel sensor erratic. He told me to book the Jeep in
as they would need to replace the wiring from the ABS module to the rear sensor in order to fix the problem. So having so much faith in the LOST Forum,
i as usual posted the problem and with the responses received was able to sort it out myself. The rear sensor was broken at the mount where it bolts in and was loose
so i fitted a large washer and sorted the problem out, no rewiring :roll:

Whilst i was at the dealer, the service manager said to me that i seem to know a lot about this Jeep and we chatted on until eventually he looked at my EHM
modification in absolute disdain. He shook his head and said that this mod was going to cause premature damage to my turbo as the turbo requires the oil and vapour
from the CCV to pass through it for cooling purposes.

Question time - Are these CCV emissions passing through the turbo or bypassing the turbo to the outlet side and then into the intercooler :!:

I had a provent on mine for the last 12,000 miles. I don't get how the dealer thinks the few ounces of oil in vapor every few thousannd miles it collects or your ehm lets go of is going to cool the turbo.

I'd have to agree with Mike123..your turbo is cooled by the oil..not air vapors...

BTW, the condensed oil vapors in your intercooler also make it work better ;-)

FYI, rockauto.com sells rear wheel sensors for $12.11 in case your fix doesn't hold up.

you are reassuring us that it's not only the US dealerships that are incompetent....

I expected the SA guys to have a little more experience.

The problem is they get their training from Chrysler in your part of the world and then come back to SA to apply what they have learnt and that is,
scan, read error code and replace parts :rockon:

Don't know who to believe about the EHM on our CRD's. All I do know is for the last year which includes last summer, living in AZ. driving in the desert many days "over" 112 deg. hasn't seemed to have any effect on damage to my turbo. I can believe that the oil vapor running through may cool some but how much??? A few degrees at best??? Make any diffence??? Confused here on this. Have driven my CRD over 60k miles "before" I did the EHM and no turbo problems. Driven it now over 12k miles with the EHM through severly HOT summer days, no problem???

Want your turbo to run cooler, install the GDE Eco tune - exhaust gas temperatures drop significantly due not having that stock overfueling happening.

Can you provide "specs." on how much cooler.

One of the folks with an EGT mentioned it over on a GDE thread - it was significant
( I thinking over 100 degrees?- don't remember the exact number)

Remember this coming up for discussion awhile ago, reducing EGT's by removing the cat and free flowing the exhaust system.

Glend - can you elaborate a bit on the stock overfueling, not sure what you mean.

I have to agree with mackruss here, I took my 2.5 CRD to the local dealer here in SA to have the "battery" light reset; four hours later they wanted to locate an ECM to swap out to see if it fixed the problem...next to my Jeep was another CRD, this time a 2.8, in for a service....the Techie was dissapointed that the ECMs were not interchangable!

Nice...you take your Jeep to the approved dealer for a service and they use it as a parts bin to fix other Jeeps. :roll:

I fixed the problem myself...it was a wiring problem :BANANA:
