honest fuel mileage

I am sorry if this has been covered before, i am sure it has computers are just not my thing. I have a Z71 that does an honest 16 mpg or so, I am considering buying a CRD liberty for fuel mileage for the 4 wheel drive . As always fuel mileage wil vary person to person and motor to motor, but i am looking for avarages, i drive on back roads alot and rearely get above 60 or so.

I've owned two CRDs.

Both of them average(d) 21 MPG city and 26 MPG highway. On my typical driving cycle, I'm consistently seeing 24 MPG in the Summer and 21 in the Winter.

If you browse through all the other reports from CRD owners at fuelly.com, you'll see that my results are very typical. Almost everyone is seeing low 20s with the Liberty CRD.

If you rarely ever get above 60 MPH like you say, and you drive easy, it's my opinion that you should be able to pull 25 MPG pretty easily.

I've got an '06, with Green Diesel's Eco-tune. I easily average in the high 20's to Las Vegas from Los Angeles, cruise control "on" and set at 75. I have seen 30 (lots of very flat road).

Around town, more like 20-21, depending on the amount of stop-n-go and A/C use.

All of it, hand-calculated.

I averaged about 22 with mixed highway/4x4 driving. After GDE tune I get 24. This is hand calculated with GPS adjustment since my speedo is off after I added lift. I have noticed many people have posted bogus results regardin MPG. I believe this comes from people taking the EVIC reading on a 30 mile stretch of flat road then posting it like it was a full tank with hand calculation.

thanks for all the quick replies, the more i look at it more the more i like these little things as a run around, i drive 30 miles one way to work and it is all back road as i live out in the country, it realtivily flat as louisiana doesnt have anything bigger than a mole hill around me. if my numbers are right this little thing should save me about 10cents a mile or so even at the higher fuel cost, which i already pay on my one ton and tractor. thanks and keep it coming, i do like to hear good numbers

as a side note, anyone running a lift and 31inch tires or so? i know me and i wont leave it stock for long. i wonder just how bad i will hurt the mileage

On my stock 06 CRD: Been on several long trips from AZ. to MO. WA. I have 63k on the odometer and average stop and go driving 22-23 mpg and on highway last trip in Nov. 2010 from Az. to Wa. state and back over Thanksgiving average milage the whole 3k plus miles was just under 27 mpg. I calculated milage myself and feel it was accurate. Owned it since new and love to drive it. Very little problems so far and I am a maintenance freak.

No lift or tires yet...

My commute sounds similar to yours. I drive 27 miles each way on mostly flat ground with speeds under 60 for a majority of the trip. A few miles at 65. With the GDE tune I am averaging an honest 23-24 mpg. Prior to the tune it was 18-19 mpg.

I have seen the overhead liar go as high as 33 mpg, but when hand calculated it was only 26.

I have an '05 with a Suncoast TC and an Inmotion chip. The best Ive ever gotten is 38mpg. I took the antenna (I have XM) off and folded in the mirrors and drove 60mph for 12.5 hours straight.

I average 32 mpg in normal driving. Part city mostly highway.

Take a long time to get to 60 mph. Use your cruise ALWAYS!

Winter mixed 50/50 driving 22mpg with highway speeds at 80mph. Summer driving very variable never less than 22mpg but occasionally as high as 30mpg and as low as 15mpg towing a 3k trailer at 80mph.

I have the ECO tune...haven't seen a mileage increase with it but I have gotten more smiles to the gallon when accelerating from every red light ;-)

and merging onto the interstate at 80mph right off of the onramp.

Fuel economy will get better once I replace the thermostat..its running much cooler than it should be.

I've seen as high as 35mpg doing a steady 60-62 mph (with my antenna and my mirrors up :SOMBRERO:

) in 100%, near non-stop, highway driving. I get around 28-29mpg driving up to northern Arizona and back (about 6k ft. elevation change) at 75mph.

I get about 26-28 "in town," but that hardly counts as most of my "in town" driving involves 60-65mph Phoenix highways. I own a bike (the manual kind) for shorter trips... With the number of stoplights in Tempe, it doesn't take much longer than driving anyways lol.

frankenlift(2.5") and 265-70-16's which are about 31's on my CRD and mid winter in new york with mostly local driving im getting just under 20mpg hand calculated. This is with 60 percent town/city 40 percent highway.

Unless you coughed up the money or conned the dealer to have a BCM flash, don't forget to correct for odometer error.
I have to take my odometer reading and multiply by 1.115 to get the real reading to calculate MPG and mileage for Work related mileage reimbursement. I have 215 80 R 16 Cooper ATR Lode range E tires.
The Cooper ATRs kinda fixed my Speedo error that always read fast, now it is ~ 1 1/2 -2 MPH off at 75 MPH.

Unlike the other Joe, this Joe tends to drive more like a normal jeep owner :mrgreen:

My mileage figures are almost double what I get from my prestine 00 cherokee :JEEPIN:

It's not the 49.6 average I got on my last TDI but it is a JEEP :BANANA:

Since I've gotten a the pre f37 TCM program, the one all 05/06 CRD's left the factory with, I'm seeing a 2 to 3 mpg increase in my normal mostly all short trip city driving :mrgreen:

I have the Euro TC and GDE full torque tune and pre f37 tcm tune. Unlike the post f37 tcm tune where the shift points are placed at about the various speed limits causing constant shifting, mine now shifts to 5th at 59 mph per the speedo and stays there till it dropps down to about 54. This works out well for speed limits of 55 and 60 mph. Considering speedometer error the real MPH shift to 5th is about 55 mph :SOMBRERO:

This combination gives me fantastic towing ability with our 3000-3500# travel trailer between 17 to 20 mpg :ROTFL:

Not to mention that it now rarley downshifts while towing in the mountains. While towing I also "keep up with traffic" and often pass slower vehicles that should be more capable on hills.
For those who drive mostly over 65 mph there's not much advantage of having the pre f37 tune.

My normal all city short trip driving, the absolute worst kind, so far seems to be 19 or better in the winter and 25 in the summer with B5, 10 or 20. I've not been on a road trip without the trailer so I don't have those figures.

The figures I'm using are actual odometer figures.

It's good to finally see a MPG thread where people are being honest. None of this "I get 35 MPG" crap. :wink:

Also, that was a good point about odometer error. I GPS verified that my speedometer was 1 mile per hour too fast with the stock tires. With my 255/70-16s, it is now 1 mile per hour too slow. So when I hand calculate my MPGs, I have to add 2% to my miles driven figure.

After 12 months with the CRD, brutal cold of Winter and sizzling heat of Summer, my overall average is now 22.5 miles per gallon for the year. This is with the GDE tune and 30.5" tires.

I replaced my bad years with the same size BFG Long Trail T/A tour and think they are fantastic for my mostly onroad driving.

One mph at what speed? If it's at highway speed yours is the most accurate anyone has mentioned in over 4 years I've been reading here. Most with stock tires report the speedo giving a 6% high reading. For example a 59 speedo reading times .94 gives you 55.46 mph that matches the rounded 55 my GPS indicates.

I have a 2005 that is totally stock, except for the tires: 235/70 Michelins, which have almost 80,000 miles on 'em now, and more to come. I try to keep 36 psi in the tires in spite of one that seems to have a very slow leak. Anyway, it is supposed to have the f37 TC, but for some reason still has the pre-f37 shift points. In any case, I average 24 - 25 in mixed city/highway driving, 27 - 28 on the road, although I have seen 30 a couple times. My GPS agrees with my speedo on both speed and miles traveled within 1 mph most of the time. All mpg figures calculated the old fashioned way: miles traveled divided by gallons put in the tank.

I have stock sized tires. I have to multiply my odo reading by 1.0447 and my speedo is about 3mph high after I hit 45mph.
