I've got a huge twisted clevis on the back that I move to the front if I need anything in the front, eventually I'll put something permanent up there, still haven't got my fairlead and winch on

other than gas, and hotel, the trip cost me a 30k recovery strap not far out of banner elk, but with all the commotion no pics or video were taken so technically it didn't happen but I'm pretty sure the rear bumper and mounting got a nice work out because I ended up throwing away the strap

overall it was an awesome trip

oh, and since there were no pictures of it either, i technically didn't have to dig out in corolla either :P

btw, the whiteish roads, it wasn't salt, it was ice :( For some reason, on the trip down to NC, none of the mountain parkway and adjoining highway/int roads had been salted, by the time we hit the peaks they were putting down brine which just made it slushy on top, from peak down to my home town it was about 200-300 miles of ice which resulted in about 200 miles of 4wd just to keep mild to moderate steering input - the compound on my tires has turned hard as a rock, when they were new (came with the vehicle) they were just as good or better than the michelin LTX MS, after 40-50% wear and some age, they're up there with the SRA's as futile doughnuts

Beautiful pictures. Glad I live in that terrain :)
Next time you should stop in Kentucky for a day and I can show you two around.

yup it's a mix of nagshead, manteo, bodie and corolla

the mountains are a mix between the route down from IL which goes through the corner of ky to wva, and the route back which is the route that goes through the NC appa's to knoxville Tn

the actual routes are identical above the KY - georgetown / louisville area, but change a bit depending on if you go to knoxville before heading east

georgetown then east route takes you through a pretty long run of mountains which includes hazard co. etc the knoxville route takes you through banner elk / boone etc which is abruptly shorter in terms of mountain terrain but will often run into closed roads during the worst of the bad weather

:ROTFL: :ROTFL:
Good ol' Hazard Co. :-)r
If you were Kentuckian, you would understand the inside joke about Hazard Co. I'm sure you have a county in your state that if you hear the name, you just chuckle about it.

When you go this way through Georgetown, KY you're less than 2hrs from me. Actually if you go this way towards Knoxville, TN you'll go through Mt. Vernon, KY (Renfro Valley) which is 30 minutes or less from me. That is I-75 to be clear. Beautiful mountains driving towards Knoxville/Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN. I wanted to look at the mountains more than concentrating on driving.

Whats the deal with access on these beaches? Do you need a permit? Required gear? I would love to go down and check it out sometime when the weather improves. Looks like a great road trip with the misses. Thanks for sharing.

ran it on the way back into NC after dropping off the running boards, and on the way back to TN on the way leaving and heading to knoxville

had i ran it on the way in on sunday/monday when i first started the road trip, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation lol..

i love that road, after barreling it on the way back into NC, i beelined for beech mountain and went and got me some peach preserves, some fancy onion ranch dressing and some garlic salsa from Freds Merc on top of the mountain :P

i started trying to do a video of it but my cam kept falling off the dash and robin was getting disoriented due to her ears popping

i found that road back in 2002ish when i had a 996 duc and had to stop for a few because my pucks were trying to twist up my leg and were getting really hot lol

Ready for another Tail of the Dragon trip
Fun ride in or on anything Have never been able to get down to the 11-12 minutes though! The Pete and flatbed took over 55 minutes to go the 11 miles, two other idiots in trucks were coming south with me going north :ROTFL:

I love the Boone area, got snowed in there one Friday afternoon with a load of lumber on, some VERY nice lady took me in, never left until the next Wednesday

Hazard used to be the county where people ( young people ) went to get married back years ago. They would marry you at 16 or something whereas in Ohio you had to be 21 without your parents consent.

Boone area is nice Tom.

Hazard... :ROTFL:
That's where the crazy people are from :-)r It takes me 3 hours to get to Hazard Co. from where I am.

are they upstream or downstream from ya bw? :P

ya know what they say.. crazy flows downstream

all joking aside, hazard's not that bad - I've gotten gas there a few times and people seem to be pretty friendly, ate at one of the choke and pukes in that area and talked to some guys that were in a "truck club" seemed like the thing to do in that region was to get a 4x4, and lower it. Maintain 4x4 traction for bad roads and lower it to better handle some of the more nasty sections of road

other than missing my left rear bumpstop which makes hard right turns feel goofy I haven't noticed anything negative about how mine is set up so I'm pretty sure i'll stick to the lifted method :P

Well JeepinJarhead,

I would have to say neither! :ROTFL:
I live in Pulaski Co. and Hazard is more East than Southeast. Man, I do not know why I have been saying Hazard Co. cause Hazard isn't a county at all! :banghead: Hazard, KY is in Perry Co.

This map shows Pulaski Co. (me) and Perry Co. (Hazard) long ways off, or as we say here "Over Yonder". :ROTFL:

Something about that area of KY, you may see people living in what you may call "shacks" or "poor housing" but they have nice vehicles. Hazard is a nice place you can say (terrain wise) but keep your eyes peeled out. Looks can be deciving. The Appalachain Mountain range runs just a little bit through my county, but in Hazard it's all mountains!!! You can see some mines from the road if you go further into Hazard.

yeah, it actually seemed pretty familiar to be honest

not much different than where I came from with people in a busted trailer half falling off the blocks, and 5 suped up mustangs/etc in the driveway lol
