WVO powered CRD Thanks for the Help

I purchased a used Libby CRD with the intent on burning grease in it. I collect so much that I could not burn it fast enough in my Mercedes and my wife was driving a gas car. So I traded in one of my three cars on the Jeep. I am in South Florida.

I did the air sensor disconnect and the Jeep has been running great since. My next modification to the Jeep is the EHM. Burning grease is actually working out rather well we are at least 5000 miles on the grease. My wife drives 90 miles a day getting to and from work. Are highest miles per gallon of diesel purchased so far is 137 and the lowest was 60. We were getting 22 mpg on just diesel. I converted it around the third tank of diesel.

My conversion I think is rather sharpe. I removed the spare tire and replaced it with a 25+/- gallon aluminum fuel tank. Under the Jeep behind the drivers rear wheel is a 4.6 gallon heated Stainless steel tank. That goes to a WVO filter mounted behind the battery that connects to a switch. The veg oil goes though a heat exchanger. As a bonus because the Common Rail is so large I wrapped it with a heater wire and insulation and this heats the fuel in the common rail to about 200 degrees. Hi, Bob. Did you say you have a 25 gallon fuel tank in place of the spare? That's a LOT of weight on the tailgate (like 200 lbs). Might want to keep an eye on that one. Also, some have suggested that on electronic common-rail systems, there tends to be more oil passing by the rings into the motor oil. Have you taken any oil samples before/after the use of the SVO?

I believe that people are not heating the grease up properly what works on a Dodge 12 valve or an old Mercedes or even a powerstoke is not good enough for the common rail system. My Common rail is heated to 200 degrees F with a line heater. These are most commonly used on Mercedes injector lines.

On that note I have the container to check the oil I was just waiting for the next oil change. I have been burning grease in all kinds of vehicles and this Jeep is the greatest by far. The best think I did was what was suggested on this web site turning off the EGR was key. As well as cleaning the sensor. I have not completed the EHM but it is in the works. I was considering running the hose along the heater hose to keep it warm but we will see.

Between me and my wife we burn 40-50 gallons a week! So far I get 60-80 miles per gallon of fuel purchased around town and 120-140 mpgofp on the highway. I really only have about 20 gallons of veg in the spare tire tank the rest is under the vehicle. Plus you have to take into account that the spare tire tank wieghts half the wieght of the spare tire mount plus the wieght of the spare tire. Really it is working out great. Think about all of the bike carrier that are mounted to the spare tire, it is the same idea.

er... how much does your spare weigh? SVO is roughly 8 lb/gal, so that's 160 lbs before the weight of the tank itself. Not saying you can't do it, just that it's a lot... there's a reason folks put swing-out frames on jeeps for large spares.

For the record, I think putting a bike carrier on a spare with more than one bike and more than occasionally is a bad idea, too. The downward twisting force (like tongue weight) is equal to the mass of the object at its center of mass times the distance from the attachment point.

Really it works great. It is almost unnoticable. Besides I run used fryer grease in a $15K Jeep I think a little extra weight on the back is the least of my worries. We rarely open the back door especially when it is a full tank of fuel. But even when we do it does it effortlessly I am sure that the door was designed to hold more weight than a spare tire, especially after months of use.

It all goes back to I am running on vertually free fuel that is why I purchased the Jeep, so my wife could run on free fuel also. It is a great vehicle -- easy to park, rides nice, cuises the highway great. I have 4 wheel drive and good space it even has good power for about 2 or 3 seconds.

Hey Bob, fellow new guy here. Your set up sounds great, I'd love to see pics of the tanks, heaters etc. Did you make the grease system yourself or buy a kit? I recently bought a datsun with a grease car kit installed just to get some experience with it. I've been thinking about adding a kit to my VW tdi and of course the CRD. Love to hear more about yours. Cj.

I sent you a PM but the TDI depends on the year as to how many parts are needed. i.e. lift pump etc. The CRD was shockingly easy and works increadibly well. Especially with ORM and cleaning out of sensors and I still working on EHM I spend all my time gathering and filtering grease.
