I have a 2005 KJ with the Franken Lift Premium II. My front drive shafts only last about a year, maybe 1.5 years. This gets pretty expensive! What is going on here? It seems they should be lasting longer.

Haven't heard that much of a ongoing problem with the front drivshaft
rear boots go and then you have to replace

PLUS having a Frankenlift or having it stock would make no difference on a front drive shaft, it is still on the same running plane/angles. lifted does not change that, unlike say on a Wrangler or something with a SFA.
What happens to them? Rear boot gone ?? bearings go??

Well wait front drive shaft or CVs? reread and now :?
so CVs which one or what happens to them?
we'll start over

How high are you in the front middle of the wheel to bottom of flare?

CV joints. My height is 21.5". The last time it went out it was the right front. I think it is going again too. You have to take into consideration that my memory is almost nonexistent! If I remember right the last time the CV was about totaled.

My memory as well Terry the reason for my confused post above.

You are not sitting that high at all, I wasn't sure where you were at anymore.
I have a right side CV going out but its due to me trying something silly and running at 23.75
With you at 21.5 your angles on the CVs can't be that bad at all, so sort of takes that out of the mix.
Thinking here, will get back to you

Thanks for the headsup on that info from Troy. I'll keep that in mind.

Terry I think its got a lot to do with all the water crossings and sand we travel through on the Florida trails. Ive put maybe 20k miles on my Jeep since Ive owned it and Ive had to replace my front right CV and inner axle shaft already. Been thinking about picking up a dedicated sfa trail rig but between moving and other recent expenses that project has been on hold.

Thats what I would say it almost has to be is the water/sand/mud you all have down there
At least with some of the older SFA's you could tear everything apart and repack wheel bearings etc. I remember having to replace a rear u joint in a campground down there on my 79 F150 due to too much "fun" in the sand and mud, :banghead:

Yep mud, sand, and water and then not cleaning the undercarriage very well right after turns that stuff into sandpaper which kills seals and CV boots in no time.

Terry, do you have to replace them right after coming up to GA or TN for events? The clay soil around here (GA) is sticky like glue when wet and will give you a brush burn if you scrape your skin across it when dry. The stuff up near Oak Ridge was even tackier (albeit not as red) as the Georgia stuff. Sounds like the perfect storm for CV boot destruction.

It probably was the sand. I get it pretty well cleaned up after rides but fine sand gets everywhere.

I made up a neat tool for washing under the Jeep. I took a piece of PVC pipe, put a hose fitting on it (with a shut off valve), the other end I put a 90* fitting on it. There is about 2" of pipe out of the 90 with a cap on the end of that. In the middle of the cap I drilled a small hole. The water really blasts out of that small hole. It will fit down the front of the radiator for a good cleaning plus reach everything under the Jeep.

Well,

The right front spinning stuff can be a problem with the Liberty's lifted IFS, and its not always the CV assembly. Why, you ask? Because of the inner axle extension on the right side. The Dana 30a differential is offset to the left, so an extension shaft runs inside the diff housing extension tube, and plugs into the back side of the right side CV half-shaft assemblies' double-Cardan joint housing. It plugs in with splines. The splines are supposed to move around, they have to move. Eventual wear is the result and a "thunk, thunk, thunk" noise during low speed right-hand turns is the symptom. Movement and wear are accelerated after a lift (even a moderate lift) because, of course, the axle drive angles are increased.

Next time you pull out the right side CV half-shaft assembly, separate it from the inner axle extension shaft and clean up and examine the inside and outside splines. Are the inner axle end splines looking worn. Are they sharp and twisty instead of squared off and straight? A replacement inner axle shaft is not too terribly costly. Packing as much thick wheel bearing grease into the new splines upon reassembly seems like it couldn't hurt.

Has this been remedied? I'm starting to get a thumping at low speeds, intermittent at highway speeds. Not the wheel bearings, and now thinking it might be the inner axle shafts on the pass side. Wondering what yours looks like after pulling it out?

Terry,

I had my right half axle replaced at the stealership. The half axle and intermediate were so rusted together they had to drive them out as a unit from the other side. Ten months later it started acting up again and I took it back to them. Put in another half axle on their tab. Just a couple of months later the half axle CV started acting up again. They admitted that the intermediate shaft had appeared rusted but they put the new half axle on anyway. Had I waited until later it would have been on my tab. Seems to me that when you replace the passenger half axle it would make sense to replace the intermediate shaft as well. Just for insurance. The spline joint seems to be the culprit. Sort of like a motorcycle chain. If the chain is worn the sprockets are worn. Replace the chain and the worn sprockets will eat up the chain. They need to be replaced as a set.

Also the tech told me that some of them have an "O" ring on the spline and others don't. My copy of the service manual shows an "O" ring. It would make sense to have the ring in there to help keep water and dirt out. I'll bet you when they put in the new half axle and intermediate shaft that they didn't put the "O" ring in.

The dealership also said that they would not replace another half axle unless I removed the lift. Ha! Like that is going to happen. I also run spacers behind my wheels. They said that only makes the problem worse. Guess I will just have to keep replacing passenger half axles and intermediate shafts, but I think next time I will do it myself and use an "O" ring.

Good information Jim. I'm going to have it pulled apart and checked pretty soon. Just have other things to take care of first though.

Are you going to do it yourself? If you are I would like to come down and help, if you like.

Let me know.

I don't have the tools and physically couldn't do it anyway. So I'll take it somewhere (besides the dealer) to be done.

I would be curious to know if they find an O ring. If you don't have a service manual and want to know the part number for the O ring let me know. I'll look it up for you and give you the part number. Anyway, the least that should be done is to make sure that they use plenty of waterproof grease on the splines.

I'll try to remember to ask about the "O" ring.
