Have new yokohama geolander h-t/s, will be hauling a three place snowmobile trailer with 3 sleds(around 3500lbs sleds and trailer) across North Dakota and Montana next week, about 1,100 miles. What type of air pressure should i be running. Looks like it's going to be cold going across dakota. do you give up traction when you run higher air pressure? Thanks.

Lower pressure = better traction

However, lower pressure also = worse fuel economy and higher tire temperature which can potentially lead to failure. So it's not worth the tradeoff when towing.

I'd keep between 35-40 PSI in the tires at all times.

Max cold inflation pressure is the safest. Probably 44 psi.

any time I've ever towed anything substantial (with any vehicle I own) I always add air pressure to the tires. Given you're estimating 3500# on for the trailer plus I'm guessing you're tossing some stuff in the boot you'll at the very least want to split the difference between your normal running pressure and the max pressure listed for the tires. Look at it this way... if you air up and you feel like the tail of the jeep is wiggling around because you're overpressured you can always let a couple pounds back out and drive again.

There are so many variables that I think everyone who tows different things with different vehicles should invest in a pyrometer. Here's an inexpensive one that works well: http://compare.ebay.com/like/2900920367 ... 602_304662

Make your best guess on pressures and then make a 30 mnute run at highway speeds. Pull off at a rest stop without heavy braking or steering and check the temps as quickly as possible. Temps equalize the longer you take. Use the probe to get temps from the center and both shoulders. Equal temps across the face are what you are looking for. Raise pressures if shoulder temps are higher than center and lower if vice versa. One shoulder a lot higher than the other indicates uneven camber.
