Put the old glow plug in the old control unit and measure heat - no danger here.
Put the old glow plug in the new control unit and compare heat - should be no danger here as well.

Ordered my kit from Berry, hope to see it this week. Can anyone confirm the manufacturer of the glow plugs? By my research, the only 5V glow plug with the correct dimensions would be the Beru model 0-100-266-042, AKA GE116. Used in certain US and Canadian Mercedes 320 TD. MB part# 001-159-51-01.

Here is an email from Keith at GDE, I'm going to go get tuned! If it wasn't for these guys I would be selling the CRD!

Green Diesel Support Team

Chris,

A lot can change in two weeks. We now have tunes available that work with
the fast metallic glow plugs. I can flash the new gp code while you still
have the ceramics in, as they would just operate at a lower temp (may hurt
startability in the mornings). Then when you install the metallic plugs
everything will be good. I am available to flash whenever, just give me a
call to schedule a time that works for you.

Thanks,
Keith

Whats the latest on the new glow plugs? Have any of you guys that purchased the new kits installed them yet?

I've got 2 more glow plug failures :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: so looks like I need to try to find something pretty quick....hopefully anyway.

The service manager at the local dealer has not heard of the new kit and didn't know it existed. Have not talked to anyone in the parts dept. yet.

Anyone have any good news??

Is this still the replacement procedure (except that the new voltage should be lower?):

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=56696

I need to get the GP kit, get the revised GDE tune and then find some one to install the GPs (with the above procedure) . What a pain, especially as I live in sunny California and don't even need them to start.

I am planning on getting the GDE tune this friday (good excuse to get it, been wanting to do it for a few years now) and maybe to the plugs myself this weekend. I need to read up on it so I don't break one!

Called 2 local dealers today and they have no idea what I am talking about with a re-flash and the new metal glow plugs. On a brighter note, they can order me in the kit with new GP's and GPU gor $165.00.

Does anyone have new info on this fix or the flash?? Has anyone has the dealer do this service? My dealer wants $475 for parts and labor.

My CRD wont start unless its plugged in and I am real leary of the ceramic GP's.

Maybe GDE could offer a complete DIY tune + flash + new glow plugs + new GP controller?

That could motivate me to finally get the GDE flash.

I had it done by the dealer and it cost a total of $378. The parts cost $166. It seems like your labor quote is a bit higher.

I do not know if they had to do a re-flash or if the GP controller outputs the correct voltage by itself. Jeep has worked perfect with the new GPs. :D

Does anyone know if the new controller 'solves' the voltage issue? Haven't heard that one before. Maybe the poster could ask the dealer if they reflashed or check with a meter and see the output. I suspect that GPs will only survive for a while with wrong voltage.voltage

Mosfet, did you get a set of metal ones or the old style ceramic ones? Do you have your invoice? Just curious why my quote is so much more??

I checked with the parts dept. at the local stealer today. One of the parts guys had a set already on order for another CRD customer. Their computer didn't show any availiable, but guess they are searching. I'll probably jump on the bandwagon and see if they can find a kit for me also, as they show the ceramics on natl. backorder.
If after a few days they don't find anything, I'll just spring for a GDE tune from Keith and forget about it for awhile.
I'm still starting, even with the cold temps here.

If it is, my dealer here doesn't know it. Everyone I talked to today seemed dumbfounded about the whole thing, except for one parts guy. He didn't know anything about a flash though, just knew there was a part number in existance for the kit.
Thats why I'm a little uneasy about letting them put the new ones in if they do find them...they don't know the first thing about it.

Yes, I got 4 new metal glow plugs with a new glow plug controller. Our parts price is the same, but your labor seems much higher. I do have an invoice.
