TSB has been released # 08-05-11 Glow Plug Kit part # 68090434AA

I don't have access to TSB's but Rick at Chrysler product support said that it includes the flash...

so, moparonlineparts charged me 114 for the kit. I had to call and order over the phone for this one...but the guys there are awesome to work with. and they know about this forum :)

however, the dealer is very willing to charge me 514 dollars for the project (including the software upgrade).

very nice of the stealership...

If you look down a few posts you'll find this... all six pages of it. Personally mine sits in a heated garage but even at 45f it's cranky. Last week during a power outtage it sat out all night and the low was 25f (not really cold) and I didn't think it would start at all.

I alsio have CRD / 06. Had it up in the snow areas late last year in temps in the low teens. Started up O.K. with some heavy clatter at 1st.

Has Chrysler issued a TSB for CRD's regarding bad glow plugs? If someone does live in extremely cold climate, I can see the problem could be a PITA especially this winter where it's been severe in lot's of places.

My dealer can't find any info on the TSB...saying there is a number missing or something. They do havde a kit in stock now for $179. The total price quote for kit, install and flash is $659.72.

Changingtime, can you verify the TSB number you posted? I'm hoping this will lower the price some anyway.

called a dealer...yes, the service guys will have a hard time finding it...that number is specific for the software flash for the glow plugs. The actual techs should be able to find it.

the first service guy i talked to couldn't find it...but someone at the dealership was helping him and located it.

Thanks for the TSB #. Now its back to the dealer to argue the price with them. Probably won't do any good, but its worth a try.

So what was this TSB all about way back when?

TSB 18-023-06 7/14/06 Replaces both 18-009-06 and 18-008-06. Similar verbage, "improvement
to torque converter operation and durability, improved glow plug operation and
durability,
update to security key immobilizer system operation, improved throttle
valve shutdown operation and durability, and improved diagnostics for DTC P0504
brake switch signal MIL.

I have to laugh because it appears it didn't work very well, although (knock on wood) the original GPs are still working OK in our '05 at almost 90K miles. But I've replaced two of the FCV "throttle valves".....

Back then they were trying to make the ceramic glow plugs, plastic gears in the FCV and weak torque converter last :ROTFL: As you know it didn't work out so well and mine became hard to start when cool/cold :ALONE:
They since have metal gears in the FCV, stiffer springs in the torque converter and are replacing the ceramic 7 volt ones with 5 volt metal ones :JEEPIN:
Something about doing it right the first time, a virtue the bean counters have not realized that can actually save in the long run :5SHOTS:

Sometimes I think it's got to do with using the parts "on the shelf" first, good or bad results, hoping they work for awhile. Then if enough complaints from consumers, we'll "attempt" to fix it. Business as usual. We're all just a number.

Gee, only $660 for a new set of glow plugs?

Guess I really got a deal picking up TWO spare sets of 7V ceramics for $300.

And the current set of ceramics is still going strong after 5 years.

After seeing what the VW TDI crowd went thru - Bosch 7V ceramic to Bosch 5V metal back to NGK 7V ceramic - think I'll sit back on the sidelines with my popcorn and watch how this plays out.

Just checked with the service dept...he looked up the TSB and read the info. Looks like they are showing 2.5 hrs labor (warranty time) to do the job, which he says is half the actual time it takes. Says the chrysler warranty only allows half the time. Trouble is, I don't have the factory warranty...mine is a car max warranty...so I get popped for the full amount as my warranty doesn't cover glow plugs. They agreed to knock $50 off "as a favor" but that it. $510 total for me.  I'm also having the thermostat replaced (running 137.5 deg) and the fuel head thats sucking air.Its a shame we get thrown under the bus on this glow plug replacement thing...like we have a choice :furious:  :furious:  :furious:

I wasn't real crazy about letting the dealer do it due to their lack of knowledge on the new kit last week, but choices are limited, so guess I'll go for it.

This isn't covered under the 7/70,000 warranty is it?

I would say 5 hours is on the low end for the first time you do it, there is a lot of stuff in the way and most to the bolts are a pain to get too!

Figures they to this 3 days after I get the GDE tune and put my plugs in! But it was a good excuse to fork out the cash for the GDE! My tstat is also junk and running very cold right now so I won't see the MPG gain yet. Time to spend another chunk of change on this thing and get all my timing belt stuff together.

I'm not for sure about this, but it sounded like it WAS covered on the 7/70 Factory warranty, as warranty time was allowed for it.
This was my understanding when talking to the service rep. Trouble wasw I don't have that warranty, and I'm over on milage anyway at 86k.

For all you guys with valid factory warranty...if your glow plugs are covered under your warranty, you may be in luck!!!

Check with your service writer for details.....
