1000 - 1200 dollars is about right for parts and labor.

I would rent the proper tools from GDE and let the mechaninc use them so that a possible chance of a mistake is lessened, and then print out the timing belt procedure from one the other posts so that they know what to look out for.

Will do.

This is on hold for the time being. Got some bad news about gramps on Friday. He's going back to the Dr today, but it looks like congestive heart failure. Not sure he's gonna be doing any driving. I'll be over there this week to replace the vent window sometime.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "guinea pig" part, although, they may not have the specialized tools that VM Motori recommends for the job. That said, my local Chrysler/Jeep dealer had never seen a Liberty CRD either (I'm in California) but they did a fine job on my timing belt. I actually bought the 3 pins ($115) for the job.

At least you are dealing with a "diesel" shop.
