I have a 2005 Liberty CRD. (180,000 miles)
Just had an EGR replaced a week ago. (3rd one)
The mechanic said I was overdue for an oil change. They like to do then at 3k, I prefer 6.
Last night, driving home, the engine started to knock & run erratic. I was about 6 miles from home so I nursed it home.
Today I changed the oil & filter.
Still knocking loud.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Mick

The bolts that hold the torque converter can come loose and cause a knock. Intenal engine parts can cause a knock. And a sticking/stuck injector can cause a knock. Running erratic may point to an injector.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for replying.
The knock is quite solid. Goes to a higher pitch (like a typewriter) with less thump with acceleration.
The timing belt has never been replaced.

You do know the timing belt was supposed to be changed at 100k don't you?
If it jumped a tooth or two it will shortly jump more and distroy it's self. It will them cost more then you'll want to spend on a 180k jeep.

I am amazed that the engine hasn't destryed itself yet.

Engine replacement costs:

Used: 5 - 6,000 dollars.
New: 7 - 8,000 dollars.

If your vehicle hasn't been damaged already, then do the timing belt thing if you want to keep your CRD for a few more miles.

X2 on Joe's post. Just had the flex plate/torque converter issue with the Princess's Jeep. Sounded the same as you described. According to the Tech (And the sages at starscan) that worked on her Jeep that style knock is either wrist pin or flex plate bolts.

I just had my head rebuilt from a broken timing belt....cost me $4,500.....change the belt if it hasn't been changed since 100,000 miles... I didn't get any knocking...she just suddenly stopped and would not start again......

I'm scared, my jeep is at around 110,000 miles and I wanted to wait on the tax return cash to order parts but reading about a $4,500 belt break makes me want to order now!

Crossing my fingers for the OP, let us know!

Mine went at 131,000 miles. A few teeth gave way and then it just slipped out completely. The mechanic said he could break the teeth by pressing on them with his thumb. It just fell apart!
Let's see....$4,500 verses $600 including all standard replacement parts...think I will get it done at 200,000 miles without flinching one bit!
