Hi-

New CRD owner here, just beginning to address the Noob Guide procedures...new fuel and air filters on the way, MAP cleaning is on the to-do list, looking into GDE tune, and reading up on lift pumps.

One main question: (so far)

I unplugged the MAF to keep soot outa the intake (and see if anything noticeble changes). Seems to run fine- better throttle response if anything. BUT...I expected a CEL to come on. I'm running MAF unplugged and the CEL is still off. Why?

Might this be a case where a lack of sign is a bad sign?

Thanks to the contributors and moderators here- the wealth of info here played a major role in my decision to buy a CRD in the first place! :D

How many times have you started it? As I recall mine didn't set the CEL on the first start.

It's been a few trips now...so probably 5 starts. The CEL bulb works since it cycles on with the startup gauge check, but from a running dash-reading point of view you wouldn't be able to tell the MAF's unplugged.

I guess I'm not really sure what causes the CEL to be thrown, because whatever that cause is, the computer isn't seeing it. Does it correlate readings with the MAP sensor? If so, maybe the MAP's so coated in crud that both MAP and MAF are mindlessly running on default values, blissfully unaware that the MAF's not even plugged in. (?)

Really odd. MAP cleaning is the next item on the list, so I'll see how that looks when I get to it at the end of the week.

I don't suppose the lack of light would be EGR-related?

MAP cleaning I found to be very easy to do. Just follow the NOOB guide and "be sure" not to touch or be rough with the sensor. I just held mine and sprayed it off until it was clean with some Gumout carb cleaner and it looked like brand new. After re-installing, CRD had a little more reponse and pep.
