 Post subject: I just purchased a CRD, take a look at my to-do list please.

I just bought my CRD a few days ago. It's and '06 with 80k. It's in fantastic condition and as far as I can tell mechanically sound. Here is my list that I have compiled of things to do with the rig. My main focus is reliability and fuel economy. I would like this vehicle to last me another 200-300k.

1. ORM - Done
2. Clean MAP - Done
3. Elephant Hose Mod
4. Fluid Changes all around.
5. Euro TC
6. GDE Hot Tune, Trans tune and Turbo + Samco hoses.
7. Filter head replacement. I'm still searching the forum on this one. I have read about the Racor mod....and i think I saw some others like the CAT2. Any suggestions?
8. Fumoto drain valve....although this oil pan has been re-tapped and I am not sure of the size so it could be tricky.
9. Air box mod. How much does this affect performance?
10. Lift pump. Eventually but not yet.

Am I missing anything? Thanks for the help.

3. Elephant Hose Mod - This will save your turbo hoses, I've got 100k on the original Turbo hoses, and they still look good.
4. Fluid Changes all around. - remember engine oil is synthetic only, Shell Rotella or Mobil1 are most popular
5. Euro TC - if you need to replace it sure, Recommended if you tow a lot. I have the replacement TC, before the EU TC became the replacement, and its fine. I'll replace with EU TC when this one is worn out.
6. GDE Hot Tune, Trans tune and Turbo + Samco hoses. definitely recommend GDE tune, either economy or hot, just to eliminate the EGR issues.
7. Filter head replacement. I'm still searching the forum on this one. I have read about the Racor mod....and i think I saw some others like the CAT2. Any suggestions? I have the Racor, Its a good filter, but If the new fuel head from Jeep was available when I did it, I would have gone with the replacement
8. Fumoto drain valve....although this oil pan has been re-tapped and I am not sure of the size so it could be tricky. Next oil change, take it down to the parts store and get a spare plug. that way you'll know what the thread is
9. Air box mod. How much does this affect performance? Doesn't really affect performance too much, just moves the intake higher for fording streams. I tried higher performance and lifetime filters, I ended up just buying the Wix filter and replacing when ever it looks dirty. Air flow effects performance significantly. Some have installed the filter minders that give you a visual indication when the filter is restricted. I just replace every oil change.
10. Lift pump. Eventually but not yet. - Don't need to do this unless your having issues with hard starting. I think it improves the performance a bit and lets your run the fuel filter a little longer.

Open up the exhaust with a good 2 1/2" Muffler and get rid of the 2 1/" choke point at the rear cat flange going to the muffler. Then two things will happen your CRD will run better with no back pressure on the turbo and Sir Isac Newton will rest in peace. Also your EGT will drop and your turbo will last longer. The choke point and restrictive muffler is for the 3.7L gasser to help reduce the stress on the rod bolts (in theory any way). The Bean Counters wanted to have only one muffler tail pipe part number. As far as rod bolt stress on a turbo diesel, doesn't happen since the turbo takes care of it.

I did the ORM untill I got the GDE ECO tune. I don't tow alot now but will get the EURO TC when the stock one goes out. I have the Pro vent instead of the EHM it catches the oil so no oil drips on driveways. mine had the new Jeep fuel head and I had no issues with it, if yours has that I wouldn't mess with it. I cleaned my MAP once and checked it since the provent was installed its stayed cleaner but I might check and clean it when I do the fuel filter with the next oil change.

change that Diff fluids and the trans if its over 60K and flush the cooling system if you need to change a hose or tstat. Other than that I have just been running the Rotella T6 and a qualitly filter (not Fram) changing oil every 6,250 miles and doing well. The fumoto valve is nice and makes changing oil easy.

I dont have nor plan on a lift pump unless I start to have issues with air getting in the fuel lines.

Bottom line is you don't have to go Mod crazy all at once just do the things that protect it first then improve.
